Nice :)
I'm sure they have all sorts of homegrown tools just like AOL does for automation, config management etc.
I bet it'll take a good 6 months for you to get your head wrapped around all their proprietary methods.

Starting at the Yahoo datacenter in Lockport on April 1st.

Knowing a little bit about how such places operate I imagine that's going to be a huge change for you.
Sounds exciting though. Best of luck!

Yeah, it will be. That's why I'm going in entry level.

After my first interview, we discussed the possibility of me coming in at a higher position than what I interviewed for, but mutually decided that it would be best for me to come in entry, and get used to how they operate and the scale of everything before I move up. That was their only concern about starting me higher.

Apparently the site manager and my direct supervisor have already discussed grooming me for the higher position from day 1 though, so that's nice to know.

Awesome news, man! Very best of luck with the new gig and hope you make the best of it!! :D

No telecommuting for you apparently.

No, but I got the inside scoop on that. It's media-overblown-ness.

Some segments of the company have had problems with managers who work full time from home being unreachable for hours at a time during the workday. In addition, there were some developers that got caught primarily working on their own startups while taking a full time salary form Yahoo while at home.

This doesn't affect me since I have an office, and the nature of my position is such that telecommuting wouldn't be feasible, but from what I was told there are only roughly 400 employees that were specifically being targeted by that memo for abusing work from home privileges.

You mean actually having to touch equipment?

I know, right?

I actually won't be doing much of that, at least initially. Lots to learn about their network. Going from supporting my little 15 rack datacenter with 50 remote sites to almost half a million nodes is a bit of a jump up. Plus I'll be into more system administration than I've had to do in the past, and it's going to take ma a bit to get back up to speed there.

Yeah, I'd say that's a few more. Thing is; you're not the only chump responsible for it now. :D

LOL, exactly.

I won't miss 3am pages from a self test on the UPS though, that's for sure. (BTW, FUCK APC for not making that schedulable. )

heh, thanks for reminding me, I have two bad batteries in my UPS right now. Arbitrary self tests, doo-doo UI, and the LCD panel is almost useless unless you're actually on the phone with one of their engineers.

I;m sure they do.

I do know that they have a distributed Nagios setup that auto generates trouble tickets into the ticking system, but past that I'm sure it will all be greek to me. :)

Applied for a gig today with a local fitness facility. Looking to withdraw those Karma points that have been building up since last summer. Hopefully there was some interest building on them. Something has to give here...

Come on big money!!

If it makes it up to you, I haven't shaved in two weeks because of laziness.

Too bad it's pitiful and patchy. I wish I could grow a full beard.

After almost a year of trying to find work in my home town, and since the plan to move out west has come off the table, it looks like we're moving to PEI to start a new. With so many medics heading to Alberta from NS and the island, it shouldn't be a problem for the Mrs' to get on in either a term or FT position. Also, I'll be able to get back on with my former company, so that'll be cool. Not in the same capacity as when we closed the Antigonish office, but I'm sure with my experience, they'll be able to crowbar me in somewhere.

Also, I found a group of folks who play ball hockey on Sunday evenings just outside of Charlottetown and will be meeting them this weekend. Apparently there is a winter league at UPEI so this will be my way of advertising my mad skillz on blocking shots and landing a D-spot on someone’s team. Not going to lie, we're so looking forward to this move, it's unreal. We’ve got friends over there, the people are great, one of our favorite sludge metal bands is based out of Charlottetown (which we know personally), and they have the Gahan House micro brew pub! The food there is amazing and they even have a growler from Pearl Street Pub in which I plan on relieving them of, somehow. ;)

Now, time to get this house ready to sell!
