The Hunger Games series. It might be a book for teenagers, but it is really well-written and overall a great story. The third (and final) book is not as liked by many, but I feel that people had their own expectations for what should have happened. I personally liked it.

Anyone read anything by Bill Bryson?

I've read a lot of stuff by him and oretty much everything is great. He has a way to make sometimes stuffy material easy to get through.

Yeah, I've read Thunderbolt Kid and I'm a Stranger...Loved Thunderbolt

Got my copy of A Dance With Dragons from the library. Read it in 3 days. Now I have to wait who knows how long for the next one. Love so many of the characters from this series. They're always suprising.

3 DAYS!!! Holy shit, you're a fast reader! Takes me about a month to read each one...I'm on Storm of Swords, just under 200 pages to go.

To take this out of the fantasy section for a while, I just finished The Good Earth by Pearl Buck. There's a reason it won the Nobel Prize. Great book, and a wonderful resource for anyone who is interested in rural imperial China. Yeah, I'm a bigtime fucking nerd.

My mom did too apparently. Not the most cutting-edge recommendation, but I stand by it.

Finished Basic Economics by Thomas Sowell. A wonderful introduction to the principles of free market economics. Not much math or numbers involved. Sticks to concepts backed up by real-world examples. Written to be understood by the general public. I especially liked the debunking of various economic myths.

OK, I'm not pandering here, (I'm actually reading this because it's written by an author I like), but I may have a recommendation that fits in better with the type of stuff I'm hearing about in this thread. It's called Zone One by the talented Colson Whitehead.

It's about New York City after a zombie apocalypse, where the army clearing the city of zombies block by block, and humans are slowly starting to reclaim the city. Zone One is everything south of the wall on Canal St., the area that has been cleared of zombies. The writing is quite good, and while it may not supply as much in the way of gore as you might expect from a "zombie" book, I think people that read fantasy and sci-fi might really like it. Another seller: the new provisional government in the book is based in BUFFALO!
