So there have been some wramblings from the christian right about a possible Romney/Santorum ticket come fall. I'm not going to bother posting any links since it's all opinion but the idea is out there.

I was wondering what you guys think. Who do you see Romeny or Santorum taking with them into the election?

Personally I could seriously go for a Santorum/Palin ticket but that's just me. (sarcasm)

i wish beyond all wishes that any of them pick huntsman and then romney/gingrich/santorum are assassinated and huntsman gets office.

no, FBI, i would not do it. but it probably won't make me sad.

okay edit for growing a heart. i didn't mean assassinated. i meant incapacitated.

Romney has already said on the record he would not pick Santorum as a running mate because he doesn't consider him a fiscal conservative.

http://realclearpolitics.com/video/2012 ... torum.html

and it looks like Romney may actually win down south today which may be the beginning of the end for Santorum and the actual end for Gingrich.

Yeah, I don't think Romney and Santorum like each other at all.

Romney was asked this question a few days ago and said something along the lines of 'there are a lot of good GOP Governors out there'. Christie would be a good fit in a lot of ways, but he said he wouldn't vacate the NJ Governorship for the Prez race. So it might not go over so well if he ditched it to be a VP candidate.

Romney will pick Marco Rubio. Santorum will never get the choice.

That didn't quite go as expected. :)

Well, it did go as expected...early exit polls actually had Romney in the lead in both states and *that* would have been unexpected.

At this point, Romney still gets the nomination and Newt and Santorum are playing spoiler for each other.

not gonna happen dude...even with a brokered convention and non-binding delegates he doesn't have the numbers.

Paul has 69 delegates right now and there are 36 unpledged delegates up for grabs...if he got all those unpledged delegates he still wouldn't overcome Gingrich much less Romney.

The only way would be a complete convention takeover which is not going to happen (especially given the fact Romney could still seal the deal before the convention)

This is from Think Progress, which is obviously left leaning, but if these figures are accurate, but is Romney weaker than I thought.

Jesus is that information so inaccessible it requires a giant infographic?

1. popular vote means shit
2. Romney basically has half of the delegates he needs with giant states that will go to him still to come...places like NY and California.
3. Even though Santorum "won" 2 states last night, Romney still got more delegates
4. Math counts http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/rig ... _blog.html

Sorry, didn't realize that was so big.

I get that delegates are what's important, but I think the popular vote being so lopsided shows he doesn't have nearly as much Republican support as he's suggesting he has.

Yeah, the base isn't crazy about him so they're giving him a tough time, but the base is crazy about kicking Obama out of office.

Take into account the places he's lost the popular vote and the places that have yet to vote.

Lost: Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina, Iowa, Kansas etc.
Won: Florida, Mass, Ohio, Nevada, NH, Vermont, Hawaii, Washington, Arizona

See a trend there?
That tells me he's going to win places like New York, New Jersey, California, Illinois and Pennsylvania.

If you win states of the size and location Romney is winning you can get the nomination. If you win those states in the general election you can win the Presidency.
The same cannot be said for the states Santorum and Gingrich are winning.

It all boils down to the fact that Romney is much more widely supported by moderates/independants. Combine that with the fact that any Santorum/Gingrich supporters will vote against Obama anyway and that spells good times for Romney in the general election. There will still be mods/indys that vote for Obama too, so it will be close.

People were saying how split the dem support was between Clinton and Obama back in '08. It got so nasty between them that the winner was not going to select the loser as a running mate. None of that mattered once one of them took the nomination, so I don't see much difference in the current repub scenario.

In related news, the Obama campaign has started shipping out Obama/Biden bumper stickers which would officially signal Biden isn't getting kicked to the curb.

Does anyone view Joe Biden as anything other than a liability?

Even some of those swing states he hasn't done well in the popular vote.

Florida
Code:
Mitt Romney   775,014   46.4%
Newt Gingrich   533,117   31.9%
Rick Santorum   222,799   13.3%

Ohio
Code:
Mitt Romney   456,513   37.9%
Rick Santorum   446,225   37.1%
Newt Gingrich   175,554   14.6%

Of course, this doesn't mean that all the people who didn't vote for Romney would vote for Obama, but it still shows that he's not strong there. Especially Ohio, which every recent election seems to hinge on.

That's CNN's scorecard, which allots delegates by popular vote; not by what actually happened. In most of the caucus states that Ron Paul has lost in, there's a very good chance he won most of the delegates. And with Santorum and Romney splitting a lot of the winner take all primary states, a complete convention takeover for Paul is definitely possible.
