I'd not been paying too much attention to the whole 'Romney is not going to release any more tax returns" thing, even though he SAID he would 'if that's the tradition', and even though he says his father is his hero, and even his FATHER said people should disclose more than 1 year of tax returns.
But now this Reid business has popped up. From what I hear he's not one known for talking out his ass, or just making things up, so I tend to think there might be something to this.

Then I saw this article where Romney actually 'responded' and it really seems now that he's hiding something. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/02/mitt-romney-harry-reid-taxes_n_1735197.html?utm_hp_ref=politics. He does that bullshit where he wont even respond to the question beyond having some bullshit outrage that 'how DARE he be asked about this, why, it must be an obama smokescreen, right?'

What do you guys think, is there anything to this story?

I doubt he's hiding anything illegal. He doesn't want the public to see how he's stashed his money, and the sections of the tax code that only people of his means can take advantage of. It's hard to play up your 'common man' shtick when you're stashing cash in the Caymans. He's following the legal requirements of the FEC, that's all anyone can really ask.

On the flip side, his dad was the first Presidential candidate that released a shitton of returns, so the irony is palpable.

Yeah, I dont think anyone is assuming there are actual illegalities (is that a word?) is there, but it's pretty clear there is stuff he REALLY does not want people to see. I think he should have taken the hit for a day or two and been done with it, acting like he has in response to this stuff is getting more and more suspicious.

"an anonymous investor in Bain Capital told him about Romney's zero tax bill."

Because it's normal for an investor to know about the tax returns of the CEO of a company they've invested in.

Furthermore: http://news.yahoo.com/mitt-romney-says- ... 24090.html

I think if he paid 0 taxes for a decade a (multiple) IRS audits just may have caught that doncha think?

Harry Reid needs to STFU just like any other day that ends in "Y".

What if those 0% tax years were because of some fancy maneuvering which might be legal, but definitely frowned upon by most people, and certainly seen as not very patriotic in a time of war and recession. No one is saying he's done something illegal, but it sure might be unsavory.

And really, he could clear this all up by NOT being so cagey about his tax returns. It appears its SOP for candidates to release tax returns, AS HE HIMSELF SAID HE WOULD DO....why is he acting like this now?

"an anonymous person close to the president has told me he murdered 2 white women at Harvard"

See how easy that is?
Yes Harry Reid either needs to put up or STFU. It's as simple as that...any other speculation on the matter is just that.

...and for the record, I think he's not releasing some of his returns for a much more personally embarrassing reason.

Mormons are required to pay tithing...10% off the top goes to the church (that's the main reason Romney's charitable giving numbers are so high)...if he's been stiffing the church on his 10% for a while that would be something he'd want to keep quiet.

Yeah, lots of idiotic claims have already been made about Obama. Not a one of which you seemed to have a problem with.

And Harry Reid needs to put up or STFU? NOT the guy running for president who mysteriously wont show us his tax returns, no...but the guy making the accusation. Ok then.

If you're trying to say I'm a birther or think he's a muslim or something equally as outrageous I take exception to that.

Yes, the guy making the accusation has to show some evidence or STFU. It's called Libel.

Dude, there's an entire meme on the left arguing against your point.

I thought this would be about Fred Willard jerking off. I am disappointed to find otherwise.

hes a mormon right? my understanding is mormons typically donate 10% of their salary to the church, which romney did this past year. perhaps this is the first time hes done so (election year) and is hiding from his own church?

CHARITY, he donated that money to CHARITY. Get it right. /Sarcasm.

I think he's hiding that he is the true father of the McCain interracial baby. Someone call Maury Povich.

No, they keep track and will have a chat with you if you don't pay your tithing.
But they do trust you to pay whatever you claim is 10% of your earnings.

If he's hiding something from the church it's that he wasn't paying the full 10%...but he's still handing them million of dollars every year by all accounts.

It was a pretty dick move by Reid to say what he said.

If Willard doesn't want to release his returns, then ok. He's making himself look bad enough without someone trying to prod him like this.

No, i'm not saying you're a birther, or think he's a secret kenyan socialist muslim. But for the last four years that shit has been bandied about, and ALL OF A SUDDEN you give a fuck about Libel? So, only when it happens to YOUR guy, lets just be clear about that.

Also, I cannot imagine for a second why "a meme on the left" would have anything to do with this. I dont base my opinions off random memes, and i'm sure if I ever tried to use something like that here to support an argument you would (rightfully) laugh my opinion off as being totally baseless. I'll save the laughing in this case.

And really, the issue at hand here is why mittens is being so secretive about his tax returns. He must realize at this point the huge hit he's taking by not releasing them, and must have decided that that's LESS of a hit than he'd take by showing us whats in them. That bigger hit most certainly is not just that his church might be mad at him, there arent THAT many mormons in this country, why would he possibly alienate the entire voting public, to not bring the wrath of some church to which he's already given millions of dollars? there has to be something else. I'm wondering what that is.

Saying
"Mitt Romney won't release his tax returns so we have to assume he's hiding something"
Is very very different than saying
"I have a secret source that tells me Mitt Romney has paid a 0% tax rate for the last 10 years"

If Reid wants to get that specific, then yes, he needs to put up or shut up...the tax return issue was already there, he's the one who upped the ante and he should have to qualify it.

Because it's about throwing out baseless accusations with the sole intent of stirring up a controversy/rumor and having no actual evidence to support it.

Reid has said plenty of ridiculous things (like most prominent politicians). This happens to be quite juvenile and desperate imo. It's incredibly petty to throw out rumor mill accusations without citing the source. Irresponsible even if you do cite the source. What's next from Reid, "My best friend's former girlfriend heard in gym class that Romney stole her friend's lunch money"? It's retarded crap like this that actually backfires and helps the accused.

Romney may have an issue with his church tithing, but he could very well want to avoid dems from using unecessary fodder to portray him as rich and "out of touch". The IRS has had plenty of time to find anything illegal. Short of that I don't care and I doubt the majority of voters care (I've yet to hear much complaining outside of the media). I don't think he's felt enough negative pressure to feel that he's actually taking a big hit over it. I would just stay on course and let dems whine about it. The damage could very well off set the gain.

Of course. That's how politics works. It's always ok when YOU do something, and never ok if your opponent does the same thing

I'm with Ed here. Don't invoke the super sekret source unless you'll willing to nut up and back up your statement.
