Campaign Signs - Do They Do Anything?

Post subject:  Campaign Signs - Do They Do Anything?
I've been wondering this as I see them virtually everywhere, if they have an actual impact on behalf of a particular candidate or ballot measure.

It seems to me that they might be good at getting more people to vote overall as they're more aware of various races, but not necessarily on behalf of anything.

I do my own research on all candidates, so they have little impact on me.

They definitely make it easier for me to passive-aggressively judge people as I drive past their house and stereotype them.

Doesn't do a thing for the election IMO but it is a convenient way to throw up your colors and start a cold war with your neighbors.

I mean, if people get a hard on displaying their political leanings, then ok. Good for them.

I pretty much ignore them, although I have a special hatred for the 'America vs Obama 2012' ones, simply because of their complete ignorance.

Well it depends...it comes down to the idiom "all politics are local".
Obviously, anyone (all of us) who is a partisan they will have almost no effect on...but the same can be said for TV ads, mailers, phone calls etc.

If someone is indeed an undecided independent, the knowledge that say, a well respected neighbor is openly supporting one candidate or position over another can be more powerful than any of those other, less personal, advertising mediums.

in fairness, are you surprised? has any president in recent history been as hated as obama by a certain demographic, who will do anything to dehumanize the man?

I heard a story on NPR last week which was about this. The basic story being that it turns out our well respected neighbors have a greater influence on us than previously thought. Something about societal development/evolution and how we tend to 'clump' together naturally into towns and cities. It was kind of weird to hear that, as I tend to consider myself fairly independent, judging things on my own and drawing my own conclusions, and really, who doesn't think that about themselves? But if we're to be honest with ourselves, can we ever REALLY know what every factor is that manages to exert some sort of influence on our decision making? How much of it is below our level of consciousness?

Yes. They called it Bush derangement syndrome for a reason.
I would argue the level of hatred for Bush in his second term is right up there with the hatred some have for Obama.

The left hated Bush mostly because of the things that he did that they didn't agree with. A small minority of people hated him because they thought he was dumb, but even that was mostly because of his action.

The right hates Obama now because of the things he's done they don't agree with, but he was hated before he was even sworn in because he was the black socialist Kenyan secret Muslim, and that drumbeat has continued since.

The hatred levels are probably pretty close. The reasons are polar opposites.

well I never said the reasons are the same (however I think the vast majority of people on the right that don't like Obama it's because of his policies). I know lots of conservatives and very few racists.
The socialist stuff really took off after the 1 party ramrodding of the ACA through congress. Because, you know, the Federal government taking over control of 1/6 of the economy just may have a twinge of socialism in it.

The Muslim / Kenyan whatever believers are the fringe...I'm not sure I know any of those in real life.

IMO, there's something inherently wrong with people OTHER THAN DOCTORS profiting off of other peoples' sickness and misfortune.
