Vanek's knee was bent inwards, that might have done some damage to the ligaments which would probably be the worst case.

It was pointed out somewhere that he got hit in the right knee but was favoring his left, I checked the video and it sure as hell looked like that. Not sure if it changes the kind of injury he could have received, but it wasn't the right that got the most fucked up.

You're right, I didn't notice that he was favoring his left leg.

I'm scared he'll be out a while. That looked nasty when he left the ice. Glad he'll make the trip to Boston, but I can't see him playing the rest of the series.

After watching the video closely, Boychuk fell with his knee between Vanek's leg which caused Vanek's foot to twist unnaturally. It could be a sprained knee, lets hope it's just a sore knee like when Crosby almost had his leg broken by that douche Downie.

We can only hope he'll be back soon enough. I honestly have so much less faith in our run minus Vanek. Probably rightly so, because the team didn't seem itself when he was out this year. In fact, I'll basically throw in the towel if he's out for good.

Just something to note, but from a positive perspective, the knee is one of the most painful areas to take a shot. A decent shot to the knee(or elbow) will stun the limb, and render it useless temporarily. There is a chance it was just stunned, and will be ok when the bruise subsides. I think there is a decent chance that if he was down from the hack, that's it's short-term. If it was injured in the collision with the boards, it will be much worse.

That's what I thought. It wasn't the hack, it was the rough ride that hurt him. Doesn't sound good, but at least it's a sprain.

totally depends on severity! sometimes sprains are worse than breaks because they linger... glad to hear its not the knee.... and hope its not to bad!!!

To better understand your recovery time you will need to understand the grades of sprain. Grade 1 usually only requires a week or 2 of recovery time. It is also associated with minor swelling and pain.

Grade 2 sprains are the most common and have various healing times. The damage to the ligament is not severe but still can cause problems. Most generally Grade 2 sprains take 4-6 weeks to heal. Grade 3 is the most serious of the grades, and can take the longest to heal. This sprain can take 8-12 weeks to fully heal if you don’t use the right techniques.

I hate to speculate, but it looks like 2 weeks is (almost very)best case scenario. 4 more likely?? Not good.

"Ankle sprain" could mean anything as far as time out. As others have said, the degree is everything.

I had a horrible sprain many years ago and the doc said exactly that: sprains are sometime worse than breaks because they linger like a mofo.

Look on the bright side: When Sid the Kid went out with a high ankle sprain a couple seasons ago, the world was introduced to Malkin. Most weren't that familiar with him, but he stepped up BIG TIME and held things together for 1/3 of the season 'til Sid returned. The rest is history.

Now, all we need is Malkin.

If it was a bad ankle sprain, wouldn't he be using crutches?? Him being in a boot must mean he's putting pressure on it and when it comes to sprains, that's a good sign..

If it's a low ankle sprain he could play on it, with mild discomfort. If it's a mid ankle sprain he couldn't play, if its a high ankle sprain he'll miss 4-5 weeks.
