Better than any other college hockey barn I've been in, and I've only seen pictures or videos of Yost.

I think the Olympia and Chicago Stadium must have had the best sight lines in the NHL out of the old barns. And quite possibly the loudest!

You should edit your title to include the word "college"

Did you know that the Memorial Auditorium is gonna be the first barn inducted into the HHOF since the original six barns? SO COOL!

Yessir! This is true epicness. The Aud beat out, "The Arena" in St. Louis, the Spectrum in Philthy, GW Forum in LA and the Winnipeg Arena, amongst others.

I haven't been back to the hall since this news broke, but I'd gladly pay the admission to sit in them orange seats when we make our next trip to Ont! The blue ones they have at the Aud Club at HSBC are awesome as well. Had the chance to sit in'em opening night (it's cool to me because it was my first game in Buffalo)

i was in the old checkerdome in st louis YEARS ago. i vaguely remember it, but that place was BITCHIN!

Olympia was special, as was MLG and old boston gardens.

its a damn shame the forum is now a movie theatre. apparently, the old hook still hangs above what was centre ice. the old hook held the old scoreboard.

anyone else think the white wire basket in those olympia pictures was kinda creepy? the basket that once held the centre ice speakers above the ice?

Creepy as hell man!

I was to a game in the old Gardens back in '98, and then again just this past October for the first show of Battle of the Blades. Man, talk about letting a monument fall to shit. Yes, it was home of the Leafs, but these old barns have been home to many great events. From political conventions, hockey games, boxing and concerts. They have a lot of memories. And the Aud was just as special, if not more.

The Boston Garden must have been one of the best of the old beasts in terms of “Weird things” to happen during events. If you didn’t have an obstructed view seat  They even had seats in the corridors for god sakes! Lol If you could see even a part of the ice from a location, seemed like they put a seat there for revenue.

I was in the Forum last march, I agree Irony, it's a shame to see these old places demolished, have their souls taken from them. I'm glad, however, that they are refurbishing the Gardens in Toronto for hockey and other sporting uses. Sure, there will be one level for a shopping/groceries (Loblaws owns it, it was kind of inevitable) but the structure and main purpose will be for hockey.

The Onondaga Country War Memorial was built in 1951. It hosted the NBA All-Star Game in 1961 and the NCAA Frozen Four in 1967 and 1971.

Most of you might recall a movie that was partially filmed there...

Three Syracuse Crunch season ticket holders dress as the Hanson Brothers from the movie Slapshot for each and every Crunch home game. During a stoppages of play, if there is a man in the opposing penalty box, one of the three will get out of their seat when the theme to Bonanza begins and proceed to travel around the main row on the ice level and crash into the penalty box as a taunt to the other team.

The Syracuse Crunch payed tribute to Paul Newman by raising a banner featuring the number seven to the War Memorial rafters prior to their game on October 11, 2008 against the Rochester Americans. Newman’s character, Reggie Dunlop, wore the number seven in Slapshot.

This has awesome written all over it, Rob! I've been looking for a Dumlop #7 sweater to add to my collection for a while now, not even on ebay for a decent price. They should have left that movie as it was. It's a classic. In no way, shape or form should a god damn Baldwin be allowed to "Act" under such a classic movie title!

This is Madness!!!

what part of the film was filmed in syracuse? i want to know what arena they filmed the huge brawl in. it was a circle, with the seats on the side expanded way up. kinda like the old tampa bay bucs stadium.

Mike, is the old Cobo Arena still standing? I went to Joe Louis in the late eighties. There was a glass atrium connecting Cobo to The Joe; it was pretty cool.

it is, but not for much longer. the glass atrium has been redone recently. its nice. they are tearing down cobo arena to expand cobo hall.

cobo has the same feel olympia did, but in a late 50s way. so its not charming.

Interesting. Detroit was a nice drive from Cleveland when I lived there; but I haven't been since I moved back to Buffalo. I just remember them parking cars in underground parking garages via elevator downtown......

it used to be a theatre.

cobo was home to the pistons from the 50s to 70s till they moved to the silverdome. cobo sucks. haha. it was used as "great lakes arena" in hardball with keanu reeves though.

Hershey had a lovely old arena; but I think they moved to a newer one this year or last.

The Houston Fieldhouse at RPI is a dump. I've been there, it's disgusting and the seating configuration is awful.

Walker Arena, though defunct for at least ten years at Clarkson had to have been awesome. Wooden bleachers? Heck yes! Pics to come later.
