Speeds aren't comparable. People are saying the placement of the puck is the problem, but it's not. It's the placement of the guns.

The NHL aims their speed guns at the goal line, so you're getting the speed of the puck there. It's the reason they say every year to keep the puck low, since lower shots are more in line with the guns, and you get a more accurate speed.

I don't know where the KHL aimed their guns, but I would be that they picked up some of the stick whip after the puck had already left the stick.

Plus, it's Russia. Who knows when the last time those things were calibrated. :p

actually, from everything ive read, they measure the speed the exact same way: when the puck leaves the stick. same way they measure pitch speed in baseball: when the ball leaves the hand.

and apparently, the gun in the KHL is aimed the exact same way as the NHL: behind the net so it measure the speed coming towards it (the only way a radar gun will work is the object going towards the gun, or away. but im willing to bet you knew that)

Who knows.

Everything I've read said the NHL had the guns aimed at the net. If they aimed them at the stick, it wouldn't make sense that a higher shot at the net would register slower than a lower on.

I dunno.

It's an impressive display regardless.

i get what ya mean. i read that when kilger registered his 106.7 MPH shot, by the time the puck entered the net, the speed was at 100.7 MPH. hence why they measure when the puck leaves the stick.

edit: it was arnott. speed was 106.3 and when it entered the net, its 100.3. however, the gun is placed behind the net, and looks through the net.
