Post subject:  Tell Me About European Hockey

I know we have plenty of fans here from a few different countries. I'm curious about how hockey is perceived in Europe, how the game is different than it is in North America, in terms of fan perception, playing style, and any other way you guys can think of.

My reason for wondering is that I tend to have a soft spot for European players (guys like Vanek, Sekera, Bryzgalov) because I don't think they get a fair shake in the NHL due to old prejudices that still exist and the fact that their underwhelming command of English (or a perception of it) makes for a hesitance to interview them. (Is someone like Sekera or Vanek, or Hecht less nice, funny, or honest than guys like Ryan Miller and Paul Gaustad? I have no idea, but it sure seems that way.)

I'm curious to learn, from people with first hand experience, and that speak the languages of some of these players, what is the game like over there, what are some of these players like? It seems like by and large, Europeans in the NHL are painted as quiet, relatively boring guys who simply go about their business and play hockey. That can't be accurate. Jaro Spacek was fucking hilarious. Why don't we see that from European players more often?

Europeans thoughts on hockey:

"Yah, here in Sweden, we love the hockey. Is fun, yah, super fun."

"ah, oui oui, here in France, the hockey...it's different from what we know. Hockey, he's like the football, but...it's special, and oh la la is it ever cold."

"Right, 'ere in England, hockey ain't really our thing int' it? Not really our cuppa tea you might say."

I have no idea why I just spent the time to write that, but for some reason I amused myself. Simple minds enjoy simple pleasures I guess.

Just kidding of course and I'm not trying to make fun of the thread or Europeans.

Maybe they simply don't get the media exposure over in Europe/Asia as they do here?

the hockeyfans in europe are very good supporters. it's louder in the arenas. most of them are soccerfans too.

the NHL ruined the european leagues. the best players go to the nhl , the rest plays here in europe. that's bad for the image.
only a few small leagues are quite successfull. sweden finland switzerland ..... czech slovakia ...... ebel ( 6 austrian teams, the top2 from slovenia, the best team of hungary and zagreb(croatia) - they are really hockeycrazy since they joined the league.

another problem: the arenas are often too small. in austria around 3000-4000 .

Nevertheless I think there is a huge potential in europe.

in europe they put the puck in the net, for 1 point on the scoreboard. they do the same in the US.
