I was upset at the time of the pick that we didn't take D John Carlson.

Holy crap, that woulda been awesome. A future of Myers and Carlson on D? Scary

Pirates win 2-1 tonight to move into tie for first in division!

Goals by Mark Mancari (yawn) and Matt Caruana (yay! Go Purps!) led the Pirates to a 2-1 win over the Scranton/Wilks-Barre Penguins, putting Portland into a tie with Worcester for first in their division.

This is the Pirates 8th straight home win, tying their previous record managed twice before.

Grags lit the lamp with an assist from Ennis, but the Pirates saw their 13 game point streak snapped by Worcester, 3-1.

Good to see that Portland is kicking some ass...I'm really pleased that Weber is doing well down there. Ditto on Enroth, especially after his horrid start

That loss to Worcester should light a new fire under their asses - last night's game was a chance for Portland to take the division lead away from the Sharks, and they blew it.

The loss will keep them honest also.

Play even harder the next game then.

The Pirates are playing 8 games in 10 days, and Coach Dineen was none too happy about it.

Quote:
''It's dangerous,'' Dineen said. ''This is a league that's run by the owners. It's not showing a great amount of concern for the players that you play a schedule like this. Unfortunately it puts players in really hard positions because there are a lot of big hearts out there that are trying hard, and everybody wants to play every game.

''But this isn't easy. You travel 700 or 800 miles and you come home and all of a sudden you get back on the bus. Playing five (games) in six (days) is crazy, let alone eight in 10. It should become a rule that they shouldn't allow schedules like this because it does get dangerous and you've got a big concern for your players.''

Hopefully the guys have some gas left in the tank for the games this weekend, a home/away/home stretch. They have been playing really well. It sucks that the Olympic gold medal game is on Sunday at 3, the Pirates play at 4. :violin:

One more word: Dineen. This guy can coach. he's been here long enough for me to see that he's a great motivator, and seems to get production from everywhere. He'll be in the NHL one day if he wants to be.

Based on his lineage; and the way he played the game, I believe it is his destiny....

I had a chance to buy a Dineen Whalers jersey (C on the chest) and everything, and I wavered. I kinda wish I got it...reading stories about his play in Hartford and his coaching of the Pirates has turned me into a big fan.

His entry in "The Game I'll Never Forget" is amazing.

River Rats and Pirates are tied at 2 each in the third period. Here's hoping our farm boys can get back in their winning ways tonight.

Also, elsewhere in the AHL, the Abbottsford Heat and beating the Worcester Sharks 4-3 at the second intermission. A Pirates win and Sharks loss tonight puts the boys back into a tie for the division lead!

After the heartbreak of the gold medal game, I just want to share with you guys that through hard work and a never-say-die attitude, the Portland Pirates have taken a clean lead in the division.

Ennis scored in OT last night for a 2-1 win over Hartford, and then tonight they doubled up Albany 4-2 to take a one point lead over Worcester.

The farm boys be makin' us proud.

He's got 59 on the season, and is 9th in scoring in the AHL. He's also the only rookie in the top 20 scorers, so that would make him the leading rookie scorer by default.

Damn, good luck to Ennis the menace then, looks like he won't be stopped with those point totals and his attitude.

Can't wait for him to be full-time in the NHL.

Why haven't we brought him up for another game yet? :D

Good job Darcy for picking this guy when he did. Didn't he pick Ennis earlier then he was supposed to go?

Yea, Ennis was expected to be a high-to-mid range second rounder. He could have chosen Carlson, the golden boy defenseman who won the WJC for the USA in overtime, but time will tell who the better pick is.
