Germany beat Swiss today in the IIHF World Championship quarterfinals. Sabres' prospect Philip Gogulla scored the only goal of the game to secure Germany's best result at the world championship in 57 years. They'll probably get destroyed by Russia in the next game, but a 4th place for a team that wasn't even supposed to be there is awesome.(they're playing because they are hosting the tournament, Austria is 16th in the world I think)

What is even more awesome is that Gogulla and Schutz were offensive leaders on that team. Germany has a record of 4-3 in the tournament and the Schutz-Gogulla pair combined for 3 GWG.

Here's a breakdown of the games:

2-1 OTW vs USA, Schutz had the overtime goal
0-1 L vs Finland
3-1 W vs Denmark, Schutz had the game winner
2-3 L vs Russia, which is impressive
1-2 L vs Belarus, Schutz had an assist
2-1 W vs Slovakia
1-0 W vs Swiss, Gogulla with the only goal

So Gogulla has 1 goal in 5 games with a +1 rating and Schutz is tied for 1st on the team with 2 goals and 3 pts(+1). It's not that amazing but considering what team they play for, the talent they have(AHLer) and what other Sabres regular did with their country, it's nice to see.

Other Sabres players:
Sekera, SVK: 2 assists,-2 / 6 games
Myers, CAN: 2 assists,+1 / 7 games
Kennedy, USA: 1 goal, -2 / 6 games

So how do Gogulla and Schutz look as prospects? The only experience I have with them is seeing them on NHL10

I know Schutz got benched during the Pirates stretch run at the end of the season even though there were holes in the roster due to injury. Take that how you want it.

Gogulla is supposed to be an OK all-around player, but sabretoothpick said he was coughing up turnovers all tournament long.

Well, Gogulla didn'T play much minutes in the tournament but I think Schutz did well on the fisrt line with Marcel Goc. But I didn't even see him play...

Schütz was one of the best German players, played with some speed, good vision and nice puck handling. He looks a bit small though.
He scored the OT winner against USA in front of a world record crowd (78,000).
(at the 4:00 mark)

Gogulla's tournament wasn't as good as Schütz's, although he got better with time and scored the game winner against Switzerland and had his best performance in the bronze medal game. There he showed that he can use his decent speed and size for his advantage. Prior to the bronze medal game he had too much sloppy turnovers and wasn't much of an offensive threat.
His game winner against Switzerland (at the 1:45 mark)

I know it's a minor detail, but that specialty gold jersey that Germany rolled out for this WC is absolutely gorgeous.

True, normally I don't like German jerseys, but that's a beauty.
