MISSISSAUGA, Ont. -- It was a play Brayden McNabb makes all the time. The coach of the Buffalo Sabres' prospect says he's seen the big defenseman step up countless times to separate a player from the puck, and it's never been a suspension-worthy event.

Until this weekend.

McNabb, who signed a three-year contract with the Sabres last week, was suspended for Sunday's Memorial Cup game after injuring an opponent Saturday with an open-ice hit. The Kootenay defenseman stepped up to check Owen Sound's Joey Hishon late in their tournament opener, and McNabb's elbow caught Hishon in the head, leaving the forward dazed and bloodied.

"Brayden McNabb does that almost every game or every other game," Kootenay coach Kris Knoblauch said Sunday. "I've seen it so many times from him. It's just very unfortunate that it turned out the way it did."

It was definitely unfortunate for the Ice, which could have used its captain Sunday night. Host Mississauga St. Michael's, with Sabres prospect Gregg Sutch, defeated Kootenay, 2-1, to improve to 1-1 in the round-robin event and dropped the Ice to 0-2. Each club has one game left to make the semifinals.

McNabb, selected in the third round of the 2009 NHL draft, is a 6-foot-4, 216-pounder who has long been known for his hitting. Hishon cut through traffic near center ice with 5:35 left in Owen Sound's 5-0 victory. The 5-foot-10 forward tried to elude the hit by ducking, and McNabb's elbow connected with Hishon's head.

"Following review of the referee's report and watching all of the television footage of the incident, I determined that it was a reckless action by the player but not a deliberate attempt to injure,'' said Brian O'Neill, discipline chairman of the Memorial Cup.

Wow. The reasoning for the suspension makes sense. I'm shocked.

Maybe O'Neill and Campbell could switch spots.

Because it's not the NHL.
