Well what is your favorite guitarist?

Most of you already know mine is Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Looks like he wants to be Jimmy Page.

I have to include Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Van Halen, I'm really getting into Paul Gilbert.

Favorite might be too tough to call. But I can say without a doubt that the best guitarist I've ever seen is Leo Kottke. The man is amazing. I've sat and watched his hands and felt like I was hallucinating because there was no possible way that someone could be making all those different sounds, and that his hands would look so controlled and calm.

And don't think I'm just some folk or bluegrass freak that doesn't listen to sccreechy, feedback-souped guitars. The list of guitarists I've seen live is vast. It includes some big names sound-swamis like Paul Leary, Thurston Moore, J Mascis, Dean Ween, Duane Dension, Jon Spencer, Blixa Bargeld...those probably aren't big names to you all, but they are to me. None of them can play guitar better than Leo Kottke. See him next time he comes to your town. He tours all the time.

You're trying to compare the legend of Jimmy Page to a guy who has basically nothing on the guy?

EVERYONE in the world knows about Led Zeppelin. Jimmy Page can do things with a guitar that guy could only do with effects, all Page used was a Wah-Wah pedal on stage.

You want to compare a legend who's band is in the Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame to him? That's just ignorant.

Just making sure Mike, because you don't compare two vastly different artists anyways.

I honestly hate comparing guitarists, they are ALL different and vary greatly. It's like trying to compare a shredder to someone who plays slower and with their soul and heart, you just don't.

I personally don't care for Sigur Rios too much anyways.

Jeff Martin - yes, he aped Page's violin bow on a guitar, too - but Page complimented him on perfecting the technique after a show once! He plays beautifully gentle or soul-rendingly hard. He's my musical idol.
Image

Matt Pike - he plays a style of guitar that is very Tommy Iommi-esque, but if Tommy Iommi taught a Mumakil from Lord of the Rings how to play gitz.

I think the topic needs to be more precise. It's hard to try to compare so many of the names thrown out there. While I realize "favorite" means your personal favorite, we all have different personal favorites from each genre, and it makes it easier to discuss then. This seems to be all over the place.
