Here's a few of my babies...


This is the first-ever release of a little band called Mastodon. It's one of my crown jewels. I have their entire discography on vinyl, minus the new 180g 45rpm re-release of Blood Mountain. Must have it!


This is Emissaries by Melechesh, a really friggin underground Israeli black metal band. They actually had to flee Israel after death threats over their chosen genre.


Here we have an original 1984 pressing of Metallica's Creeping Death single on red vinyl. It's the original Music of the Nations release with no barcode. I have Metallica's first four records and plan on finishing the collection eventually. First up are the Jump In The Fire and Motorbreath EPs.


One of my favorite albums right here - The Moody Blues classic Days of Future Passed. Dad gave this to me as a gift from his personal collection. It's an original pressing, and at 43 years old (released in 1967), it's in impeccable shape!


My favorite album by King Diamond, this is Them. It's got the absolutely epic Welcome Home on it. I found this at Record Baron on Delaware, otherwise known as Heaven.

I hate taking pictures and putting them on photobucket, then linking them here. Maybe I'll put in a few pics eventually, but for now you'll just have to take my word for it.

To age myself a little more, I started my music collection just buying vinyl, because that's what was around, and my family had a nice record player. I'm obsessed with music and I always have been. And my older brother was a big influence on me in that arena. He is a great musician, and he had a HUGE record collection. He'd spend most of his paycheck from his part-time job on records when he was growing up. I picked up the habit from him I guess. The love of going to record stores and searching through dirty stacks (House of Guitars anyone?), to find something you heard about a long time ago.

So I spent the early part of my music collecting buying records only. My friends used to rag on me for not buying TAPES believe it or not, thought I was old-fashioned or something. So I have at least a few hundred records between what I have here in Portland and what I left in New York.

Eventually I got a cd player when I was in high school. Then I started buying mainly CDs because I was smitten with the new technology. And then it started to get much harder to get records of new music anyway, although easier for me because I bought mostly from independent labels and they never stopped making records, god bless em. But I still kept buying vinyl because it was often the cheapest way to get things, older music especially, and it all adds up quick when you're buying a few albums a week.

Shit, talk about TMI. As John Lee Hooker would say, that's my story. Or a chunk of it anyway.

House of Guitars in Rochester? My brother loves the hell out of that place.

To this day I still have dreams where I'm shopping for records, even though I only go to a music store a few times a year these days. CD ripping and burning has affected even an old guy like me. I still don't own an ipod or other mp3 player.

But still, I can't imagine what it must be like for people of the newer generations who don't go to stores, to whom music recordings are entirely non-physical. It just seems like that would lead you to feel more detached from the music somehow. I'm sure I'm just being a cratchety old guy and I'm wrong, but ....

Oh, I totally get it. I don't think my girlfriend does though. Sure, she plays along and goes to the store with me, and she says I get a "kid in a candy store" look in my eyes when I start digging, but she just isn't into sifting through stack after stack in a tiny store with an old hippy using a beat-up credit card machine from the 80's, finding gems and treasures, having to choose which few to bring home that day.

Find it strange that I go through this at record stores and antique shops as a 25-year-old?

I worded that wrong. I should've said "As a younger guy in this digital day and age?"

But yea, kids who are raised right know what it's like. Dad did a good job with my brother and I (he also has a taste for vinyl).

By which I mean I was the same way.

I know that might seem to contradict what I was saying about the younger generations, but first, I don't think you're that young at 25, and second, I think you still might be an exception to the rule at that age.

I'm a seventeen year old kid, I love my vinyl albums and the prospect of expanding this collection. Just got a few limited pressings of albums from metal bands I like as now, but I'd like to change that.

My record player has been fucking up lately, though and I need to get that settled before I start dropping all my money on records again.

Turned on my record player and flipped on my stereo. Apparently my needle is picking up very faint radio waves, somehow. I'm not sure how this is happening and if it's involved in the problem at all, but this is crazy.

So instead of just being crackly and having the sound fade in and out, the needle arm just arbitrarily slides closer to the center of the LP. Awesome.

I was afraid of that.

I have very limited experience with it, but from what I can tell, usb turntables are total, total, pieces of fucking shit. I bought one last summer after my last turntable died. Thought it would be nice to burn copies of my records, etc. Well it totally sucked. It had so much background noise the very first time I play it. I sent it back immeditaely because I got it used on ebay, and luckily the seller was cool with that.

I posted a thread about on sabres.com, and crosscheck advised me to buy a real good component turntable with a good needle, and get an external soundcard w/software to do any mp3 or wavefile conversions. I haven't actually done that yet, but I think that's the best advice. I definitely think that turntable you have sucks though, because a friend has one and complained to me when I asked about it, and they sell it at Target.

I use a USB turntable myself, but only because I haven't gotten a Denon yet
