i'd agree that he's not really a star. the band is/was relatively famous, but if you asked anyone to name the members of coheed i'd bet most people if they were even able to name anyone itd be claudio sanchez.

none the less, i used to love coheed and cambria. fun story, i fell asleep standing them up seeing them play warped tour in 2004(give or take a year). i guess thats what happens when its the first band to play at 10 am, and you've been up with your friends all night.

i instantly perked up when they played this though. devil in jersey city will always be their best song.

Jesus fucking christ. My whole fucking point was that this guy is well known, has money and should be able to get drugs without robbing a fucking Walgreens. Why is this a debate? What is the cutoff then for a "rock star"? What is your definition? Rock star to me simply means that the guy is famous, has a bunch of money, plays in front of thousands and has sold tons of records. Does it matter that he's the bassist of a band versus a lead singer? Jesus.

i was just saying coheed is one of those bands where the members aren't really well known, like the lead singer is. that's the way it is with most bands, though.

not trying to start a debate.

You couldn't have a more fitting user name. You really don't get it.

Well I love debating, as you probably surmised.

I do think that making money in music is exceptionally hard though, this isn't just me playing devil's advocate (or at least not all of it). The only money you make is from touring, and a lot of bands that tour do absolute bare-bones operations.

Where do I cross the line between star and mere professional? That's tough to say. Major stars are obvious (Metallica, Ozzy, Beastie Boys, Radiohead, etc.), but I think I draw a tough line between A-minus list stars and the rest of the crowd. Here are some examples:
Green Day=stars, Rancid=not stars
Neil Young=star, Neko Case= not star
Pearl Jam=stars, Mudhoney=not stars, The Melvins=not stars, Soundgarden=?
Outkast=stars, Talib Kweli=?

These categorizations have nothing to do with my opinions of their music. A lot of bands I love might not even fit my bill for a "star". Are Sonic Youth stars? Arcade Fire? I guess Arcade Fire are stars but does that mean they're bigger than Sonic Youth?

Who knows for sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if even some of the bands I mentioned there aren't swimming in money. It's a recession, sometimes selling records isn't gonna keep you from needing to hold up Walgreens to get your oxycotin.

um...clearly you don't get my point. I'm not arguing how big of a star this douche bag is. Millions of people know him and idolize him, he has a fat bank account and has sold millions of records. He is in a very successful band and he's a star to many many people. Also, if you don't think that Tim Armstrong from Rancid is a star in certain parts of society than you're clearly out of your mind, or at least not in touch with his music or history. A lot of those bands you listed I've never even heard of....but it sure as hell doesn't mean that because I haven't that they aren't famous.

Also, my whole point is that the guy shouldn't need to hold up a Walgreens, he's just fucking retarded. I'm done playing this semantics banter game with you today. Have a good one.

If fuckers would stop nitpicking for giggles then maybe we'd stay on topic.

DF, I think you're kinda missing the thrust of my point too. I don't think this guy is anywhere near a star, no matter how you define the word. The reason I think that's important in this case is that I think only the top echelon would have things like handlers, gophers and such. So he had to do his own dirty work, no one was watching him, no one was there to provide for his addiction. If he had been a star, he'd have been a lot less likely to have done this IMO. It doesn't mean he or another major star wouldn't have done it out of pure stupidity, but I think it would really decrease the chances of that.

Anyway, have a good night too. Check out some old Mudhoney if that's one of the bands you've never heard of.

Do we really have to argue about if the guy was able to have a drug gopher or not?

No, but as far as things to debate, seems like a pretty fun subject to me. Is there any reason not to?

okay fuck. So let's just say this guy doesn't have enough clout to have his own personal ball washer, let alone a drug gopher. Can we at least agree that a guy with his bank account and probable connections to drugs versus say myself, should be able to get pills without having to rob a damn drug store?

Yeah he should. And in fact, if he's as much of an addict as it would seem, that should be something he has taken care of for the entire tour before even stepping in the van. I just finished Keith Richards' new autobiography, and he says that a real addict cares about nothing else but getting his stuff. So yeah, he really dropped the ball on that. Very amateurish all the way around, as an addict, as a thief, and as a musician since this forced him to miss his gig.

But really, who here HASN'T ever held up a Walgreens with a fake bomb plot in order to get pain killers? Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

I have an addiction to sex so when I'm leaving my wife for an extended period of time I make sure I have some porn on the old Ipad. You don't see me out stealing services from whores now. Preparation is key.

Exactly. And preparation fits within every man's budget.
