I found this TED talk that was pretty interesting.
The ugliest music ever written.

performance starts around 7:50 if you don't want to geek out on math history.

I love TED. Great website.

Scott Rickard dubbed this the world's ugliest song, but I wasn't really offended by it (I listened to it twice). It's not nearly as bad as "We Built This City" by Starship.

You can't write music without patterns. This is no exception. It goes in rhythmic patterns of threes, then twos, and it almost always alternates between low and high tones. Basically, I'd say it creates a pattern that is an intentional attempt to be discordant and arhythmic, and finds various riffs on that pattern throughout the piece.

Yep, typically the 4th tab I open when I get to work (after IRC, Facebook, and SJ) is ted.com/talks.

Priorities ;)

Oh, and unfortunately, some of my best friends have a band that makes music way uglier than this.

This isn't ugly. It's abstract. I think they failed miserably to make ugly music, because I don't think it's possible to make ugly music.

All music naturally draws on certain emotions and imagery. This wasn't something that you could tap your foot to. It did, however, create an erie, spooky sort of vibe. It seemed like a piece that would be very effective if used during a foreboding scene in a scary movie or something.

When Scott Rickard speaks of the world's ugliest music, what he means is that this is a piece of music devoid of any pattern. The human brain is wired to look for repeating patterns, therefore we find such patterns "beautiful." The absence of this structure is "ugly."

The notes the pianist is playing are not themselves ugly, but because there is no pattern I don't think you could technically call this music.

Check out this TED talk, that uses dance to explain science.
