According to a couple music sources, Grinderman is no more after playing a set this weekend, after which "Nick Cave told the crowd, "That's it for Grinderman. It's over." He added, perhaps as a jab at bands who reunite, "See you all in another 10 years when we'll be even older and uglier." This probably doesn't mean much (or anything) to most of you, but it's terrible news to me.

Why do all my favorite bands break up?

Everything ends eventually.

Big Nick Cave fan here, but Grinderman never really tripped my trigger. Maybe I didn't give them a fair chance. Don't quote me, but for some reason I was under the impression that this was to be a temporary band, but I have nothing to back that up. Maybe heard it on Sound Impressions? That's how I found out about Grinderman.

Don't worry, Stu. You know that whatever he comes up with next will be great, maybe even better.

OK, I'm gonna nerd out over this a little now. This is mainly aimed to respond to some of Bagboy's comments, but it's also about my feelings on the band in general.

All four members of Grinderman are also Bad Seeds, however there are other members of the Bad Seeds that aren't in Grinderman. The Bad Seeds are still technically an active band, and are kind of like the mothership in Pfunk terms. But the Bad Seeds are in serious flux over the past 7 years or so with two original members leaving, and a more aggressive sound. There have been only two Bad Seeds albums in the past 10 years, and the last one, Dig Lazarus Dig!!!, was to me almost a Grinderman album with extra instruments. Meanwhile Grinderman has released two albums of their own in a period of 4 years. What happens to your relationship with those non-Grinderman Bad Seeds when a lot of people start groving on your side project more than your bread-and-butter outlet? I don't know but I think that might have a lot to do with the breakup.

I know it's not a huge deal and they will all still be making music together as the Bad Seeds, but it bums me out. Grinderman 2 was so good, and when I saw them in Seattle, they blew my mind. It's gonna take me a little while to get over this.

Thanks for opening this thread, Stu. For some reason I had a lukewarm reaction to the Grinderman albums on first listen, but since you opened this thread I've dug them up and have been listening to them lately. They really are pretty good, even by Nick Cave standards.
