...and the Sabres enter the year ranked 22nd in the league; for whatever it's worth.

Meh. Just another media outlet casting them as underdogs. I like it - grow the fire in their belly.

Last season they could have been a 6-8 seed (but not a true Cup contender of course). This season we should expect, just from the law of averages, that they will not lose as many games from injury again. Even if they do have injury problems, there is more depth across the entire roster. I still don't expect a Cup contender, but I really do expect a 4-8 seed.

I'd like to narrow it down further but not only is the point system a factor, because it compresses the standings in an artificial way, but the Olympic schedule is going to make fatigue an issue. Tired players will cause the standings to even out a little more also. Younger teams will gain an advantage from having more stamina, but veteran teams are usually the better teams - but will suffer from the schedule more.

Basically, like last season, I see Buffalo (like many other teams) being able to win a division or fall to 8th or worse based on just a few good or bad swings.

Always do. That's the Buffalo mentality since we never have won the big prize...we're always underdogs!
