You would think, but no.
The logic goes is that the Calder goes to the best rookie, but the NHL defines what a rookie is, and that's changed over the years. For example, the age restriction part wasn't added until the 90s because some Russian guy won it in his 30s. Only hook there was that he had played pro hockey in Russian for years, but under the NHL's definition, the only recognized pro league was the WHA. (Which is why Gretzky never won it.)
In short, yeah, way too damn complex.
