When that puck was turned over, OV was at the redline for that breakout pass, how do you go 100 feet in 1 second to get there?

Regardless of how hard he skated, he would have never caught the shooter, and it wasn't his job, as a winger he needs to be covering the point when he comes back into the play in case the pass is made.

Do you not know basic fundamentals of hockey?

I could have sworn I typed up a pre-cursor as to why I know it wasn't his guy to defend and his positioning as to where the play was at. I still don't think he's a great defensive forward. He's never been known as one, and as I said before: hitting does not equal defense. He seems to get into these spurts of playing well and hitting, and then disappears. I don't know. I think he's an amazing player, but I don't think he's all that great of a defender.

Hitting is defense. Why wouldn't it be? You're trying to prevent the puck carrier from advancing. THAT'S DEFENSE.

Yes, that's a form of defense, but not all hits = defense. Some hits can come after the puck is away from the player and has advanced up ice already. Going out of the way to hit someone could cause a breakaway. It could cause a penalty. So no, I don't think hitting is defense, but it's a part of it.

The most important defensive aspect to me is being positionally sound. Ovechkin isn't always in the correct position. I just don't think he's as good defensively as you guys are all making him out to be. He's not much of a two-way player. I guess that's just me.

If you hit someone, you take them out of the play. So it's basically *always* defense, but can also sometimes not be a smart decision. But blocking a shot can be a dumb decision and can cause a chance, sort of like every defensive play out there, so that point is moot.

Ovechkin hits a ton. It causes turnovers, intimidation, and taking players out of the play. Especially since he's a forward, that's useful as shit. So yes, his hitting is defense.

Of course as per usual, we agree to disagree on that one. Surprise, surprise.

The bromance had to end at some point. Don't worry. We'll agree again another day.

I agree, don't we normally view big shutdown defensemen as guys who always hit the other players? Are they always positionally sound? No, but they will lay out that big fucking hit so you think twice about coming into their zone.

Hitting is very much defense in the NHL. Even if it is a bit after the puck is gone, that person is out of the play and therefore, can't receive the puck for some time.

I suppose. There's a fine line. Chara will lay out the big hit, but he's also always positionally sound.

He's also a defensemen. Ovechkin hits freely because he's a forward.

I love how a thread about Adams and Patrick being fired has morphed into forwards playing defense

The Sabres sort of lack defensive players at any part of the ice.

His wingspan covers the entire ice. When ISN'T he positionally sound?
