Peter Sykora was put on waivers today. I think Buffalo should put in a claim on him. He's a natural scoring veteran, who can still add something to the PP, and some veteran leadership down the stretch.

What do you guys think?
1.6M Cap hit, we'd be responsible for .800M

If we needed another forward I'd rather call up one of our boys from portland than sign a substar in decline

I agree with you to an extent Pants. I'd love to see Gerbe, Ennis, or even McCormick up full time, but Sykora allows us to be aggressive at the deadline, perhaps moving 2 roster forwards (MacArthur/Stafford) and get a big return possibly to a team looking to get younger. I also think he's got more pop than Hecht or Stafford, and could add a different element to the team. Although after last night, it's looking like our top 6 may be getting it together.

Sykora won't have enough homies here to be productive.

Good responsible defensive player who has had several good seasons recently minus one bad one for an admittedly awful edmonton team.

Still capable of potting goals, won't be a liability. Has played in defensive systems in Minnesota and NJ. Excellent idea.

If we don't, I will be very dissapointed. I always liked Sykora, and like what was said, it allows us to be more aggressive at the trade deadline.

He'll cost the same as Mair and put up twice the offensive production or more.

I'd normally be interested, but he's been pretty awful in Minnesota this season, and I'm not sure why. If I had paid more attention to Minny this year (I like them and Vancouver in the West), I would have more of an opinion. From what I know (14 games, 3 pts and -7) I wouldn't bother with him right now.

had we have gone on some bad losing streaks i would say yes just to shake things up...but i am pleasantly surprised at how well we are doing...don't think we need him...someone will be picking him up for sure

I don't think he'd succeed under Lindy Ruff's system.

From what I've heard, Minny didn't give him much of a chance, for some reason. He was in the doghouse all year, or injured.

Sykora's cap hit is more than twice that of Adam Mair ($1.6M vs $758,333).

And this season Petr has 2 goals and 3 pts in 14 games played.

Mair has 5 assists in 35 games played.

Honestly, I don't really see the value add to Sykora who is unlikely to gel with the guys the Sabres have, IMO.

Jay said in the original post that we would be responsible for 800k.

He also has those stats on a crappy team.

Minnesota is trying to open things up with the new coaching staff and Sykora was supposed to help that out and he hasn't.

The Sabres have limited cap space and I don't think that adding Sykora's contract and cutting in to the cap space that the Sabres do have is a wise move right now.

FYI, Sykora cleared waivers.

Now Sykora at half the price on re-entry waivers and send Paetsch to Portland.........
