Well, there's a fair amount of speculation that he's going to go for around 3.5 to 4.

How much would Hamhuis want?? 5+ million??

I wouldn't be shocked if a GM with money to burn made a crazy offer over $4.5M per for Hamhuis.

All it takes is one GM to make a crazy offer........

Why is Marc Andre Bergeron only paid 750k? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought he was wayy better than that salary indicates.

As mentioned he's small and horrible defensively but he was without a contract until Markov went out with an injury. If Markov didn't get injured Bergeron may have not played at all this season. So because the season had already started MTL could only offer him soo much money.

The Ottawa Senators’ hopes of re-signing shot-blocking specialist Anton Volchenkov are not looking good.

Senators GM Bryan Murray already has more than $49 million committed to next season’s payroll and admitted to the Ottawa Sun that re-signing Volchenkov, a UFA on July 1, won’t be easy.

The defenseman rejected a five-year, $20 million offer back in February, as his side believes he could easily get $5 million on the open market this summer.

That’s led some disgruntled Ottawa Senators fans to suggest Murray should trade first line center Jason Spezza and his $7 million per season cap hit before his no-movement clause kicks in July 1, as that would not only free up money to re-sign Volchenkov, but also perhaps help keep UFAs Matt Cullen and Andy Sutton in the fold.

Ottawa Sun reporter Don Brennan rightfully dismisses that suggestion, however, claiming Spezza has been unfairly made the scapegoat of unhappy Senators fans.

Brennan pointed out Spezza, unlike former Senators Alexei Yashin and Dany Heatley, still loves playing in Ottawa and wants to remain a Sen. Plus, the team wouldn’t get back equal value if it moved him, leaving a gaping hole in its offense.

Unless Murray intends on blowing up the current roster and engaging in a lengthy rebuilding process, it makes no sense to trade Spezza, who at 26, still has another eight-to-10 productive seasons left.

show's you how much volchenkov wants if any of yall have him on your pick up list.

Well, it's time to start thinking what moves to make in the offseason. We obviously need to make several moves and with Hank and Toni be UFAs, I thought I would start with D-men. We do have 6 or 7 guys who can potentially fill the roster, but it would leave us very young in the back. With the exception of Myers, I think defense requires more of a veteran presence. That being said, I will list the top 25 guys available UFA d-men this summer. I am going to leave out anyone over the age of 35, mainly because I don't want our big signing to be a 39 y/o Foote or Sydor. I will rank them by what they made this season.

Pavel Kubina $5
Paul Martin $4.5
Brett Clark $3.5
Willie Mitchell $3.5
Derek Morris $3.3
Mike Van Ryn $3.35
Randy Jones $3
Joe Corvo $2.75
Anton Volchenkov $3.2
Dennis Seidenberg $2.25
Dan Hamhuis $2.5
Shaone Morrison $1.975
Jordan Leopold $1.75
Paul Mara $1.675
Brad Lukowich $1.8
Nick Boynton $1.5
Lukas Krajicek $1.475
Garnet Exelby $1.725
Milan Jurcina $1.375
Carlo Colaiacovo $1.4
Zbynek Michalek $1.5
Jay McKee $800k
Marc Andre Bergeron $750k
Lukas Krajicek $700k
Martin Skoula $575k

Out of these guys who are available, none were among top 30 points scorers, Bergeron and Colaiacovo were the only 2 in the top 30 PP scorers (7 and 4 respectively), and only Exelby was in the top 30 for PIM (behind Rivet and Montador.) Now it's seems if we are looking for someone to quarterback the PP thru free agency, it doesn't seem there is a viable answer among these guys. I would like to see Myers be groomed to handle the point full time. Maybe sign one of the above veterens to play a character role and continue to help the younger guys grow. Paul Martin would be nice, but maybe a little to pricey. A couple guys I would be interested in for lesser money would be Seidenberg, Mara or Boynton.

What does everyone else think?

If they could get Leopold in a Sabres jersey for under 2.5 that would be epic. I liked him when he was a Panther, and I'm even more impressed with him now as a Penguin, minus the heads down skating that got him put on the DL compliments of Sutton. He's smart, very mobile, and steady in all 3 zones. He could get 40 points easily, while contributing to both special teams and being a a solid top 4 blue liner.

Volchenkov would be nothing shy of unearthly but he's going to get 4 million/year minimum and I think the Sabres need to aim a little lower in the price range right now.

Volchenkov would be awesome to have, but he'll be more expensive than what Buffalo can afford, and Buffalo actually needs some puck movers that can improve the PP.

Leopold fits that mold, but he isn't as talented and solid defensively as Seidenberg. This might sound silly to some, but the fact that Seidenberg is a lefty makes him a better option than Leopold who is a righty. Myers, Montador, and Rivet are righties, and if both Tallinder and Lydman walk there will only be Weber, Sekera, and Butler as lefties. We don't want to depend on Sekera and Butler for starting minutes, and Weber is not a PP asset, so a solid lefty PP d-man that contributes on the PP is a near necessity. Having d-men paired lefty-righty is an advantage both 5-on-5 and on the PP that shouldn't be overlooked.

Leopold is listed as a lefty, but I can't remember from watching him play so I'll edit this post later if I remember too. I do know that he has played both sides effectively well for the Penguins which means that he has good hands on the back hand and skates well all over over the ice. And if he is a right -shot, that's never a bad position to have too many of. Everybody wants right-shot blue liners.

Yeah, you're right. I got my d-men mixed up. Leopold is a lefty, but Seidenberg is a better version of Leopold. For a righty, the best value out there is Kurt Foster. He put up 8-34-42 with 26 pts on the PP on a 600k contract in TB.

I'd love to see Seidenberg and Foster paired up, with a few bucks left over for an upgrade at forward if Stafford can be traded.
