Now, what're your thoughts on a Staal-Myers pair?

Staal-Myers pair would be great. I would like to see a solid stay at home D-man with Myers that
way Lindy can let Myers get creative and carry the puck up the ice more. It just seemed like when Myers got the puck sometime last season and carried it up the ice he opened up lanes for other players.

Well, I think it's like what you said about letting Myers go up on the rush more. Even if a forward messes up and doesn't cover Myers, Stall is a very defensive defensman and could bail us out. And although this is counteractive to what you said, perhaps it will also induce a little mean-streak into Myers. ;)

I have no problem with Myers being more physical. When play is in the defensive zone, Myers could use a little more gnar in his game. He started to show it more as the season went on, trying to fight twice (but his opponent wouldn't drop em) and roughing guys up at least five times. Plus, there was that beautiful check he delivered on Malkin late in the third period in a game where Malkin had the puck on his stick coming around the back of the net. Myers told him to sit down and lo and behold Malkin got flattened.

Yeah, I didn't even realize that Marc was a RFA. I'm surprised I haven't heard anyone else mention him. I would LOVE to have him as a Sabre, although he'd need a new number...My guess is that he'll get resigned in New York however.

Did you not read my first post? Sather can't even get the guy to listen. They are having an IMPOSSIBLE time signing him. The best they'll get from him are compensatory picks, just watch.

LOL trust me, i'm pulling for you just as much. I REALLY want him. There's not a lot of defensman around like him, especially so young.

He'll get a great offer this summer. If the Sabres were the ones to grab him for four or five years, I'd be ecstatic.

The Rangers view Staal like the Sabres view Myers.

Would you trade Tyler Myers for a package like that?

For clarity's sake, the dish on compensation picks is (regarding the expected salary range for Staal this upcoming FA season):
<$3,119,539 - 2011 2nd round pick
>$3,119,539 - 2011 1st round pick, 2011 3rd round pick

I'd be OK with either of those (my guess is Staal is getting $3.5M and I'm fine with that number), but like Jay said, there are more options that may not require giving up picks even if they might be slightly more expensive.

To get the Rangers to not match an offer sheet, my guess is that the cap hit would have to be over $5M per and you might need to get into the $6 or 7M per range.

Personally, I would offer Staal a Duncan Keith-esque contract, give Myers the same deal when he hits RFA, and have the top pairing locked up for the next decade.

But, the Sabres are unwilling to make bold moves like that.

Sather always plays hard ball with RFAs. He knows he has more leverage than the player and he uses it.

Just look at Brandon Dubinsky last year. And in the end, Sather didn't lose Dubinsky.

Is Staal really going to sit out or sign in Europe? I doubt it.

Now an offer sheet is always a possibility. I just don't see the Sabres playing that game. Especially after the Vanek offer sheet from Edmonton.

While that is all true, Marc Staal has A LOT more clout than Brandon Dubinsky. Sather fucks this up, and he's losing their #1 defenseman and possible future captain.

Careful.

Mrs. Staal's vagina is considered royalty in Canada. You don't want to offend royalty do you?

I also like the idea but we are talking about Darcy the guy isn't going to put any offer sheet on any RFA. I will be shocked if he goes after any top end unrestricted free agents! I just have a feeling he will be after low-level garbage like usual. Sorry I just don't have faith in the guy at all.

Good God man, enough already..........

Don't be so sure about that. Sather is a hardass and that team has some serious defensive depth.
