We need a puck moving defensmen, and not many are better at racking up the points than Corvo is on the backend. Corvo is a puck rushing defenseman with 218 points in 486 NHL games and we could dearly use his presence on the PP. He is 33 so he shouldn't command a huge salary. We could get him for less than 3 million at least for 2-3 years. He can anchor the PP and it'll let Myers develop into the future PP QB.

He made 2.625 million in cap hit last year.

By the time Corvo's deal would be up, Nick Crawford would be ready to step in and play PP QB on the unit Myers isn't on. This could work, but only for $2.875 or less IMO - if he gets $3M or north, he's being overpaid.

Yea, that would be perfect. I was looking at the FA lists and he popped out at me. Same with Olli of course.

Corvo made 0 impact with the Caps after they picked him up at the deadline.

I'd look elsewhere for a PP QB.

He is just awful defensively, and surprisingly average offensively. If you're going to get a guy who sucks without the puck, make sure he can at least put up 55+ points and really run a power play. Like Gonchar. Otherwise, their better off putting a forward at the point and gaining a high quality defensive player.

I advocate the signing of Gonchar, but I'm in the minority.

There's no D in Gonchar. Unless you pair him with a stay at home guy, do not want.

And that stay at home guy that we pick up ought to be paired w/ Myers, imho

That's been my plan since I first mentioned Gonchar. It's why Myers would benefit from playing with a stay-at-home partner.

My only concern at that point though is that Myers is just SO. DAMN. GOOD. defensively, I'd hate to see that part of his game suffer. Unfortunately, he can't join the rush and stay at home (though some would beg to differ, due to his 37' wingspan)...

I don't think rushing the puck would hurt his defensive game because he only carries it when he finds a seam. Otherwise, he dishes it off to the opposite winger or center.

Isn't it Corvo's nickname in hockey circles "Oh no" Corvo because he turns the puck over all the time?

I know, he could cover a vast amount of the neutral zone while skating back if he gets trapped. Basically minimizing breakaway passing options. He's a hell of a player.

Agreed, and usually we'd get lucky with one forward deciding to do the responsible thing and cheat back towards the blue line when Myers was down low...

If so, then I SURE AS HELL don't want him. Any defensemen who does that will always be on my "no" list. You fight too hard for the puck to lose concentration at the last second. I have always felt he was a skilled player though. Joe has impressed me quite a bit during his career. Maybe his best days are behind him now, and that lost step is making him cough it up.

I guess it's true, but outside of their top PP unit, with Green and Ovechkin on the points, there wasn't too many people to worry about with their second unit.

Their first unit is like a Malkin/Crosby line. What was it something like, Backstrum, Green, Ovechkin, Semin, Knuble or something like that?
