OK, so before people get their panties in a bunch, I know Stempniak and Stafford are roughly the same player.

But what if we could Trade Drew Stafford for a 2nd round pick to a team like Colorado, Edmonton or the Canucks, and then sign Stempniak to a 2.5M deal?

Here's the way I look at it, Darcy could move that pick and Connolly or something like that at the deadline, and maybe get something REALLY good back, or just hold onto the pick and draft a future winger, or maybe do something really cool I didn't even think about.

We get back Stempniak, who is a WNY boy, a hard worker, and slightly smaller, but definitely more willing to use his body. Gonna pop in about 35-45 points a year, and has expressed interest in playing hockey for his home town team.

Plus I really think Stempniak would be really good with Vanek and Roy. He's never really had the opportunity to play with two talented players like that. When he played with the Coyotes he got to play with some talent, and was a machine down the stretch. Stafford has played with nothing but those talented guys, and still lacks 1st line production.

What do we really lose by taking a shot at shaking up the roster a bit? I think that it's worth a shot, especially with Luke Adam, and Zack Kassian getting themselves ready to be full time NHL players anyway.

I understand that, but this is an instance where the Sabres have the upper hand, cap space to sign a guy, and flexability to trade and get some assets back for a similar player. It seems like it's a shrewd and smart roster move, that improves the team now, and for the future as well.

That's because you're one of the last 3 people still drinking Staff's kool-aid

Stafford and a 1st round pick or Stafford, Sekera and 2nd pick for Ray Whitney (if he's on the market).

Ray Whitney is a consistent 20 goal+ scorer, around 60 points total, usually scores 8 PP goals a year with about 20 PP assists, has a cup ring and has veteran leadership for our forwards. But he's a LW.

I'd do this. But honestly, I would take almost anyone over Stafford

Oh I know but by the trade deadline, we don't know that he won't be.

we could have signed ray whitney this off season but he did not want to come to buffalo. Maybe you are thinking ryan whitney. If you do not like jay's suggestion of stempniak, what about Bill Guerin on this team instead of stafford.

I've been standing on rooftops with a megaphone yelling about Bill Guerin since July 1. Glad to see everyone else slowly joining the part haha.

And plus, Stempniak did not show up in the playoffs (only 2 assists in 7 games), after a terrific regular season finish with PHX.
