Considering it's a non-playoff year and a pending team sale, should Buffalo start trading away pending UFA/RFAs after Pegula takes over? If so who should go? I'll suggest the following...

Connolly - I actually like him but his salary doesn't justify staying. If he had good wingers his production would go up - which it will playing with Vanek now. Another team making a playoff run could use him more though so he could land a decent pick/prospect at the deadline.

Grier and Niedermayer - They could possibly shore up a 3rd line somewhere else, but I doubt anyone would be interested. They look their age out there.

Gerbe - Unless Buffalo needs him to fill an open roster spot next season there's little time to trade him before his stock is down permanently.

Rivet - same as Grier and Niedermayer...too bad his body can't match his heart and character anymore.

Butler and Sekera - I'm ok keeping Sekera if only one other d-man is added for next season, but Butler has to go for whatever 7th rd pick is out there.

Stafford, McCormick, Montador, Weber and Enroth are definetly worth keeping. I say Stafford because I think his potential is still better than his actual trade value.

I agree about Niedermayer but like you said who the hell would want him.

Not sure if all can be considered trade candidates... but if you add trade, buy out, and walk players... and see how much cap room we can come up with...

If we get rid of all of those players, we would free up the cap space of 13.2m.

yeah it's tough to say "trade the guys we don't want" because the obvious reply to that is why would someone else?

Gerbe might have some lingering trade value, as he was a fairly decently ranked player before this season. He's hurt that by his lack of scoring in the NHL, which is what the knock on him was.

You might be able to move Butler or Sekera, but I don't see why you would. Can never have enough defenseman, even bad ones.

Rest of that list is meh. Nobody will want those players due to age or salary.

Connolly, Grier, Niedermayer, and Rivet are UFAs at the end of the season. Grier does not put up the numbers, but is a positive influence in the locker room. I could give him another year. Connolly should have been traded in 2009. That would have created room in salary and roster space to acquire the top center we need. He, Niedermayer, and Rivet are tradable if we miss playoffs; otherwise, they can walk.

Stafford is a bubble. He is an RFA at the end of this season. He receives harsh criticism for his horrid play last year and early this season. His play has stepped up since returning from his shoulder injury. Is he playing to his potential, or is he trying to look good to net a contract here?

Butler, Sekera, Weber, Hecht, and Pominville are our silent tradable assets. If we can move them to get better players, that is something worth doing.

There isn't a team out there that will take Hecht or Pomminville's contracts.

Honestly, what's wrong with either of Sekera's or Butler's play this year. Sekera for god sakes has been one of our best defensemen this year, and a good enough PP QB. I still think Myers is better but Sekera for the second unit.

How long did we give Soupy a chance to become the guy he became and we just throw two defenders under the bus after 3 seasons?

Butler is 24, this is his third NHL season and doesn't even have 2 full seasons of games under his belt yet. Sekera is 24 also, he hasn't even played two full seasons worth of games yet also.

Butler has been terrible, and I don't see much potential in his game. Sekera has been decent this season, but I want our d-corps to be better than Sekera as a top pairing with Myers and one of our so-called PP QBs. That just isn't good enough when you consider the d-corps that have won Stanley Cups over the last 4-5 seasons.

Anaheim - Niedermayer, Pronger, Beauchemin.
Detroit - Lidstrom, Stuart, Rafalski, Kronwall.
Pittsburgh - Gonchar, Letang, Goligoski, Orpik.
Chicago - Seabrook, Keith, Hjalmarsson, Campbell.

Sekera would be lucky to see ice time on the 3rd pair, let alone get a start. The bigger picture I see is that a great top four and a solid d-corps is a huge key to winning a Cup, and that's been pretty consistent over the years. We need to realize that what we think of as decent for our team is not actually good enough league wide...not good enough for a Cup. Just because Campbell was a late bloomer (that really isn't as good as his contract anyway) shouldn't justify giving every other d-man prospect eight years to develop. That's about all this organization has done for ten years - wait for AHLers to develop. We already have the goalie, stock up on defensmen that can dominate at BOTH ends of the ice, and then worry about forwards last.

Every name listed here accept Weber and Stafford should be traded. Stafford is just now coming into his own. Weber is the smash mouth type defenseman I want on this team.

I think Pominville could move in the right package.

I could see him go to a team like the islanders, being a youngish guy with a long-term contract on a team with cap room to spare. Not many others though.

If you goal is to win a cup...you have to figure out what to do with a 7.14M hit on the wing who puts up Clarke MacArthur numbers while contributing nothing in his own end. I mean...really, we pay 7.14M for Ray Whitney guys.

The only way you are moving him is with some serious loot. Yes, you have to give him away and then some to get anyone to eat his contract through 2014. Before you jump on it, realize that keeping him means almost without a doubt either Miller or Myers have to go in 2012 or you are going to win nothing with those 3 and a bunch of McCormicks (like 8 of them...and a couple of Butlers thrown in). You can be basically a 5 player team like Pittsburgh if Crosby, Malkin, Staal, Fleury and Martin are those 5. (Notice those three guys are centers who make others better and play better in their own end then most of ours). Say what you want, Pominville's deal stinks, but he plays in his own end and isn't raping our payroll like Vanek.

So how do you get rid of him? You package him with Enroth and Gerbe for Rob Schremp, Blake Kessel and Mikko Koskinen (Isles). Enroth becomes their starter and Vanek plays next to Tavares now. We replace the 'prospect goalie' position and essentially push 'REBOOT' on this whole mess. Where does it leave usagainst cap?

-7.14 Vanek
-4.5 Connolly (If they resign him...ugh)
+1 Stafford ( I think he'll get about 3.3 as an RFA)
-1.4 Grier
-1.25 Neidermayer
-850K Gerbe
+300K McCormick
-3.5 Rivet
+1M Montador (More then that, F it, fill in with someone else)
+250K Sekera
(Weber in for Butler, even swap salary wise or close)
-600K Lalime
+1.4 M Schremp

So that is...drumroll, 15.6M off the cap. You team looks like:

C: Roy, Schremp, Gaustad <??????>
LW: Ennis, Hecht
RW: Stafford, Pominville, McCormick, Kaleta
(Adam/Mancari/Ellis)
D: Myers, Montador, Weber, Sekera, Morrisonn, Leopold (Grags or Schiestel)

Then add Erik Cole, Alex Tanguay and Marty Turco as a one year fill in until Biron is UFA and can come back to be the real Marty on the bench. These three are about half our cap savings. So what about the rest? Well, we have to keep Myers looming contract in the future in mind, but that said...JASON ARNOTT is the big bodied warrior we've all wanted in the middle for years. He gets 2yrs 10M to come be my anchor.

So before you cry at the loss of Vanek and all his 'potential' and Enroth who may or may not someday be Hasek II, ladies and gentlemen, my 2011 Sabres:

Cole-Arnott-Pominville
Tanguay-Roy-Stafford
Ennis-Schremp-McCormick
Hecht-Gaustad-Kaleta
(Adam/Mancari/Ellis)

D: Myers, Montador (Or 3.5M fill), Weber, Sekera, Morrisonn, Leopold (Grags or Schiestel)
G: Miller, Turco

I could roll like this.

Lets see where to start. Your not going to get much in return but getting something is better than nothing.

Connolly, Hecht, Butler, Rivet, and probably throw in Gerbe. I just don't see him being anything more than what Tim Kennedy was.

Vanek is one of the best goal scorers in the NHL and far better in his own end than anyone gives him credit for. I think his contract is too high, but only by .5-1M or so, the same amounts I think Miller's, Hecht's, and Pominville's contracts are too high.

I think given the right center, that Vanek would be great again. Roy is a good player, but doesn't click with Vanek as well as we would like.
