The Sabres have seven RFAs at the end of the season. I am curious what everyone would be willing to spend on which player and at what price you would allow them to walk if an offer sheet is presented. Here's what I would pay and what I would walk at:

Stafford $2.75 walk $3m
Gerbe $1.5 walk $2m
Sekera $1.5 walk $2m
Butler $750k walk $1m
Weber $1.75m walk $2.5m
Enroth $1.5m walk $3m
Mancari $750k walk $1.5m

There is a little wiggle room, but I really am looking at what compensation we get if each player gets an offer sheet. Here's the compensation:

600k-1m..... a 3rd rnd
1m-2m.......a 2nd rnd
2m-3m.......a 1st and 2nd
3m-4m.......a 1st, 2nd and 3rd
4m-5m.......(2) 1st, 2nd and 3rd
Over 5m.....(4) 1st

Now on a side note, would you trade Stafford for Doughty (another rfa) straight up? What if we had to throw in Gerbe or Butler?

Re-sign the highlighted players.

Stafford, if he continues on his current pace will demand atleast 3 mil for 2 or 3 seasons. (Most likely 2 seasons given his age and pending UFA status following the up coming season)

Sekera is a definite re-sign, probably at 1.7 mil for a couple of seasons or so.

Weber is a definite re-sign, probably at 1.25 to 1.5 mil for 2 to 3 seasons.

Enroth is a must if we are going to address the backup net-minder position. Price looks fair.

Butler, Gerbe and Mancari I hope are traded at the deadline, otherwise, qualify them and thats it.

None of those players will garner an offer sheet.

I limit what I would pay Staff. We have been burned before by players playing well in a contract year (Hecht, Pommers, etc). If someone offers $3m or more, I'll take the picks.

I guess that will depend on how stocked the farm teams roster will be. I can see Mancari or Gerbe taking a 2 way deal and spending a majority of time in Portland.

EDIT: Just read your post again Squanto, correction on my part, I thought you were speaking on the Sabres qualifying offer. You are correct, Mancari, Gerbe and Butler will most likely not see an offer sheet from another team.

Stafford is worth keeping under 2.5 mil, Sekera if no other d-men are aquired is worth keeping under 1.5 mil, Weber is worth keeping under 1 mil, and Enroth is worth keeping under 1 mil. They won't get offer sheets and Buffalo will only be obligated to provide a 10% increase, which is below the salaries I listed. The other guys are useless.

I agree with most of that

Mancari is a UFA next year and most likely the Sabres wont try to resign him, imo

let Gerbe walk, sign the others

Butler can't be happy in the Sabres system, he's going to want to be thought of as a sure thing in the top 6 mix next season, but I don't know if they think that highly of him.

Still a wait and see with Stafford, right now those numbers look okay but are you really going to fret over 25k? I mean, really?

I agree with the Sekera assessment, million dollar wheels and ten cent hands. WAYYY too much for Weber and Enroth good lawd no!

What happens if someone goes after stafford? Take the picks and run? Or do we hold on to him another year and hope he keeps developing into the player we want.

Depends on what someone offer us. If it's a one year deal for something not too substantial keep him, if it's a big deal for multiple years take the picks.

We had a 7 page discussion about that in the main forum. Most people agree that if someone comes calling with a stupid offer sheet, you take the picks and move on.

PSP thinks he's the lynchpin of the offense and should be kept at all costs.

That's why I had Staff at $2.75. If someone offers $3m+, take the 1st, 2nd and 3rd picks from that team. I would still offer Staff and Butler for Doughty if LA would take it.

You can't be serious with that offer? Better bet landing Jack Johnson than Donuts.

I would have preferred Jack Johnson, but they just signed him to a 7 yr extension. Now they have 4 defensemen making over $3m. I don't think any team would want to be paying a 3rd paring d-man making $3m a year.

WTF? Stafford and Butler for Doughty? Do you think LA will take that? Do you really?
