Explosive firepower does not win in the playoffs. Out of Montreal, New York, Washington, and Buffalo, I'd take Buffalo first and New York second at this point. Montreal and Washington would get decimated in the playoffs.

I cannot subscribe to this theory, there are many examples, but lets look at Buffalo. They had an explosive offense (yes after the lockout and rule changes). This brought them to 2 Conference finals in 2 years. Then look at Pittsburg, Detroit, Anaheim, San Jose, all have explosive offensive capabilities.

Just an opinion mind you, but the proof is in the pudding.

Detroit? Defensive juggernaut. Anaheim? Offensive explosiveness? Clean your eyes out, man! Nieds, Pronger, Getz, and Giguere. San Jose? Perennial playoff flame outs. Pittsburgh? They tightened up and had to play sound hockey (hell, Maxime Talbot was their clutch scorer to win the Cup - not Crosby, Malkin, or Staal). Buffalo? in '06, we were balanced through and through, with a hot young goaltender and in '07, we had our soft, pretty asses FUCKING STOMPED by an angry, physical, DEFENSIVE Ottawa team.

You're right - the proof IS in the pudding.

The last 5 Stanley cup winners have been ranked in the top 5 in goals for during the regular season.

Tampa Bay #3 goals for
Carolina #3 goals for
Ducks #5 goals for
Detroit #3 goals for
Pittsburgh #4 goals for

1970- Boston Bruins # 1
1971- Montreal #2
1972- Boston Bruins # 1
1973-Montreal #2(by one goal)
1974-Flyers #4
1975- flyers #5
1981- Islanders #1
1985-Oilers #1
1989-Calgary #2
1993-Montreal #6
1997-Detroit #5
1999-Dallas #6
2003-Devils #13(only example of non high scoring team)

The proof is in the pudding. Washington does have a chance to win the cup, a high scoring team will always have a chance. The last 5 Stanley Cup winners were all in the top 5 in goals for in the regular season. Of course to win a cup you need a good defense with a star defensemen or two and a very good goalie and you need a top 5 scoring team with a good special teams(usually in top 5 pp and pk).

All those teams had offense fueled by DEFENSE. Bazing.

The only teams that I cannot think of off-hand that had a very productive defense of the last five are the 'Canes and Bolts.

Pens - Gonchar
Red Wings - Lidstrom and Kronwall
Ducks - Niedermayer, Pronger, and Beauchemin

This would be exactly correct, not only for playoff games but regular season as well.
Quite simply put, it goes like this: The team the applies more offensive zone pressure 8 out of 10 times wins the game. Thats all there is to it. Pressure in the offensive zone must (and this is critical) include actually scoring, this Sabres squad has lacked for the last 2 seasons, still does lack and will continue to lack that scoring touch until they get off of their ass and bring it in.

Look, lets talk realisticly here, This team does not have consistent offensive threats, hell, their record early in the season is smoke and mirrors. This team needs to make some moves, and not just Hecht or Tallinder, I'm talking about the top 6.

VANEK, ROY, STAFFORD, MCARTHUR, CONNOLLY, POMMINVILLE

1 or better yet, 2 of these guys are going to have to go, it is what is man, thats why I do not get attached to players, but to the team as a whole.
