Rick Nash may be biggest deadline deal

If Rick Nash is traded during the next two weeks, it would likely be the single biggest deal of the deadline period. It’s tough to imagine a player with more potential impact changing places.

One of the top goal scoring wingers of the last decade, Nash would potentially bring instant offense to whatever team could land him. A strong skater with a big shot and a nose for the net, he’s topped the 30-plus mark six times and 40 twice for the Columbus Blue Jackets, a team that has never been able to provide him with a complementary center.

While he pledged allegiance to the Blue Jackets in January — telling Aaron Portzline of The Columbus dispatch, “I love Columbus. I love being here. I love being a Blue Jacket. The city of Columbus deserves a winner and deserves a good product on the ice.” — Nash also said, “This has definitely been the toughest season of my career.” He added he would not let the no movement clause in his contract stand in the way of a deal that would improve the team.

Oh good. Another winger. Where's that center we're looking for?

Listen, I love Rick Nash. I think he's a consistently good, sometimes great player. At the same time, we don't have the cap space, and we have greater needs than Nash.

Besides, even if we did get Nash in an effort to blow things up and start over, you don't build a team around a power forward. The Blue Jackets have been trying to do that for years.

He may be a power forward but the guy's got hands. He can be a playmaker or a sniper, too.

Buffalo can't afford to lose the players it would take to get him...and they would still be short at center. Then with Nash's cap hit there wouldn't be enough room to get that center, or even fill all the holes left on the roster after sending Columbus a king's ransom.

Geez, I don't know. If we're going to win multiple cups, we have to take a shot at guys like this when available. The only guys we have on this team who I consider capable of helping us get there "at this point" are Miller, Pominville, and Vanek. Sure, we have some guys with potential, but they also have the potential to not reach their potential(a concept foreign to our overvaluing GM). Nash is already a superstar. I'm not advocating throwing them everything, a bag of chips, and a porn star, but at least have a pony in the race. If another team wants to overpay or has assets CBS would rather have, then fine. Just don't preach me any more of this core/draft shit as being the reason we didn't try. That may have been our forced hand in the cash strapped era, but not anymore.

Nash is a guy we "need". Here's why. Whenever we play against them and he has the puck, I'm a little bit afraid. Who on our team provides that, besides Vanek?

The only problem is how do we acquire him and fit him under the Salary Cap.

He has a 7.8 million dollar cap hit. That would give us Miller, Vanek, Pominville, and Myers all with 5 million+ contracts. Then you have Leino, Stafford, Roy, Ehrhoff, and Regehr all around 4 million dollars.

I'd love to get the guy, but the only way to get him, is to dump one of those 5 million plus guys or two 4 million dollar guys.

We have 8 million left next year and have only 17 players signed, we have 23 signed this year. So we would have 300K left to get 6 guys. And the NHL minimum contract, is more than 300K.

Roy and Stafford, no problem, or Roy and Ehrhoff (even though I bought his jersey). Leino has started coming into his own. Yes, he has a 7.8m cap hit, but who's to say we can't get him to sign an extension or new contract (not sure if we can negotiate immediately or not), in order to lower the hit?

It still does not solve the largest problem this team has. Center. I like Nash a lot. He would be a great building block. But you'd be talking a hell of a lot of moving and shaking to get him and get him under the cap. Not to mention you are going to have to give up one or two young guys I really like (kass or mcnabb).... I rather have kass AND MCnabb now and later. Than Nash now...

Cause even with Nash and no center. You still aren't getting through round one of the playoffs.

I'm to lazy to look. But tell me the 1 & 2 centers on the final two play off teams the last few years. We have no one that compares... Build down the middle...

He's awesome player but a #1 center should be our focus. And I doubt he'd waive his NTC go to a team that's only 2 spots above CBJ.

Any thoughts on stastny? Could he be available? Could he fill the top line center?

Stastny
Ennis
???? Adam if he puts his game back together
Goose - if he signs a more reasonable deal

Would that be accaptable down the middle?

NYI, you can't renegotiate a contract once it's been signed. The only way to do so would for him to be bought out, then signed to a lesser deal. Contracts can't be restructured once they are signed under the current CBA. I have a strong feeling that the owners may push to have that modified once the current CBA expires.

I think you'd probably have to give up something like Kassian, Roy, First Round pick, and Sekera or Leopold to get him. The Jackets also seem to be looking for a goalie, so maybe swap Enroth in for Kassian in that deal. It's a high price to pay, but Nash is an elite talent, and only turning 28 this year. I'd pay the price if I were a GM.

If you were able (huge IF) to acquire Nash; it would mean moving some serious salary, and moving Myers, Kassian, 1'st rounders... Not the type of thing a struggling team with several glaring weaknesses is wise to do.

Time to move any players who become UFA's if possible now, for some draft choices. I don't think Hecht is movable due to his concussions. Boyes? I know he's good in shootouts; but he is useless otherwise. We'd be lucky to get a 5'th rounder for him. Gaustad could have value as a faceoff man to a contending team.

Probably need to look move players like Stafford; whether we get equal value or not. The only way we get better for next year is through free agency or trade, and that will require cap space. Hopefully a GM with real vision is in place by then.

Trades and free agent signings are only effective if you improve your team - and nothing that has been done lately (years) has accomplished that. There are no game breakers, or blue chip prospects in the system that can turn this team around.

Or, we can just stick with what we've got, and been doing; and hope - beyond reason, that things just do a 180 next season.

I have a sinking feeling the latter will hold true...

If you buy out a player, you cannot, under The CBA, re sign him.

I would also pay that. Winning teams have 3 or 4 guys who you are legit SCARED of when they have the puck.

Like I said before, on our team, that consists of...Vanek.

I'm pretty scared when Roy or Gragnani handle the puck...it usually ends up in our net

He just signed his 7.8 million this year for 6 years I think.

The biggest problem with your proposition is how do you rid of Roy and Stafford? Who would want to trade for them? Roy, yes, but Stafford, no one will want him at his price right now.

And Ehrhoff stays, we all clamored for a PP QB and we got one, now we all want to see him gone as soon as possible. I really don't you people at all.

Then another thing, Ennis needs resigned, Kaleta, I know we all want him back too and those guys won't break the bank. But it would still put us out of contention for a legit center, which I doubt any would be available in FA though.

It would put the Sabres into a huge bind if they got him, we'd have three really good wingers on our team. The rest would not work out.

I would say do it if that's all we needed, but it's not. We need to get a Center for Pommers and Vanek that will be dominate with them.

Nash is an amazing player on a shitty team. With better line mates I really think this guy could be an elite winger. I'd move a lot to get him but we have to get really creative to also be able to fit in a reliable top line center. But then again, that's the whole idea of rebuilding. Wait and see is my guess.
