The first-place Buffalo Sabres hope the new year brings more of the same for a team that appears set on ending a two-year playoff drought.

The Atlanta Thrashers, meanwhile, are sorely in need of a fresh start in 2010.

What has begun as a disastrous road trip continues in Buffalo on Friday night for the Thrashers, who have lost six straight overall but will be trying to win their seventh consecutive meeting with the Sabres. Full story http://www.nhl.com/ice/preview.htm?id=2009020610

WGR News Reporting
Buffalo, NY (WGR 550) -- Sabre forward Derek Roy was back on the ice at Thursday's practice for the first time since suffering an upper body injury last week. Roy was skating on the 4th line during the workout. He will play tomorrow against Atlanta. Pat Kaleta didn't skate today, but did yesterday and Ruff said he's still struggling a bit. Nathan Gerbe has been sent back to Portland.

6-2 Sabres. An utter rout. Pissed-off payback.

Just minimize Roy's time - He doesn't need to be out there too long. Our team giveaways have dropped substantially since he went out. Sorry, Derek.

You need to learn to play within your limitations.

Cheerio.

Happy New Year! Go Sabres!

So, we are the only other game, other than the Classic, on today. The NHL should have worked out a television deal for a second (indoor) game for New Year's day. It would be great if hockey comes to own New Year's day, the way the NBA has Christmas and the NHL has Thanksgiving (and, I guess, ML baseball has the 4th of July).

That's exactly what ice guru Jim Craig wants - for the NHL to absolutely own New Year's Day.

A four o'clock game between the classic and the Sabres game would have been pretty great.

The problem here is that New Year's Day has traditionally belonged to college football, which is wildly more popular than hockey nationwide, and which is much more suited to TV's advertising format.

Myers learned from his mistakes last matchup - he's gonna have Max in his crosshairs tonight!

Atlanta seems to have our number recently... I hope we can come out and dominate this game tonight.

I can only imagine the hit - Max racing with the puck around the back of the net...Myers comes around the corner and KAFUCKINGBLAM he killdozers Max.

Traditionally New Year's has belonged to college football, but I think they have weakened their hold on the day by making the BCS championship game the only really important game, and that is a week after New Year's. It used to be that New Year's Eve and New Year's Day were owned by college football. Now, I think their product is much weaker because nothing important is settled by New Year's.

That leaves an opening for the NHL to exploit.
