Maybe we just have different preferences. Emerick and McGuire spend half the game reading their little prepared anecdotes about every player and it drives me crazy. I don't fucking care about hearing how Travis Zajac once got his tongue stuck to the flagpole and couldn't talk to the refs for a week. I like guys who call the game, or when they're not calling the game, are analyzing it or talking about something relevant and insightful. There are so many announcers out there who follow the Emerich/McGuire pattern that it is rare to find a team that actually calls the game. Edwards/Brickley do.

Or the way that he calls a play when he thinks there should have been a penalty aganst the other team and says "NO PENALTY CALLED!"?

What makes the Boston crew so different and so much worse? I just think that, for a game where we have to regularly listen to the likes of Doc Emerick, Pierre McGuire, Joe Micholetti, etc., that Edwards and Brickley are a welcome alternative to most of the non-Sabres announcing crews.

For me it's way more than just yesterday's game. I have heard these two a lot and each game adds onto the last. They have a habit of calling foul on anything that isn't in the favor of their team while also discounting or excusing any good play against them. We get a sensational goal and the sun was in the goalie's eye but when they get a garbage goal it is trophy worthy. We get boarded and it was a dive "get up!!" Edwards screams...they get an honest check thrown against them and the guy jumped from the top rope with a chair is his hands!! Aside from Jack comparing their wins to Bostonians fighting the Revolutionary War and him laughing when people are injured, the guy is just fucking annoying at best.

Joe Benenati and his partner spend a minute and a half of play talking about their favorite kinds of pizza.

Trust me, I've heard them more than just yesterday, and heard them announce more games than just Sabres games. They are homers, no doubt, but I don't think it's to the degree you guys portray it.

He's actually compared Boston victories to the Revolutionary War...twice that I know of. He has actually laughed at players who have been boarded and injured. Every time I catch them announcing those two down play anything good from the other team while beating their chests over the most mundane play from Boston. I'm not saying he's the devil or anything, he's just a tool bag that I can't stand to listen to.

I find those type of announcers are predominantly in "non-traditional" hockey markets.

You know, the ones who are compelled each period to remind you which color jerseys the home team is wearing

This. I have lived all over the States and I have yet to find an announcing crew outside of traditional northern markets that call the game like I am used to with RJ.

Jack Edwards is a complete, wuss-ass homer with little to no objectivity who wets his pants every time a Bruin scores or lays out a hit.

Andy Brickley is a high quality color guy who obviously cheers for the Bruins but maintains enough objectivity to make good points. He gave Sabres genuinely a lot of credit. He actually took Edwards to task when Edwards said that trading anyone on the Bruins for Scott would be a negative for Boston, replying that Sabres brought Scott in for one purpose only and it's admirable how he stands up for teammates.

I like Rob Ray better as a 3rd guy between the benches than as a color commentator.

I couldn't agree more. As bad as the overall NESN experience can be, that's strictly due to Edwards. Brickley actually makes their broadcasts tolerable, which is no easy feat.

Yeah I saw that this morning.
Scott said when they were sitting in the penalty box, Thornton told him he "got him pretty good".
That was a pretty non violent looking fight...Scott must have hands made out of brick.

Not gonna be too many guys willing to drop the gloves with him if he can give Shawn Thornton a concussion in the course of three or four punches.
