Chris Chelios is headed back to the show.

    Chelios

The 48-year-old defenseman, a three-time Norris Trophy winner, has been called up by the Atlanta Thrashers, general manager Don Waddell told ESPN.com Wednesday.

Chelios had 22 points (5 goals, 17 assists) in 46 games with the AHL's Chicago Wolves this season. He signed an NHL deal with the Thrashers on March 2. The Wolves are Atlanta's primary AHL affiliate.

"Chris has been an outstanding leader and mentor for our young players in Chicago and his level of play has made him deserving of this opportunity," Waddell said, according to STATS LLC. "He's a tremendous competitor who strengthens our group of defensemen and instantly adds a veteran presence to our locker room."

The Chicago native last played in the NHL last May 27 with the Detroit Red Wings against the Chicago Blackhawks in the Western Conference finals.

Pierre LeBrun covers the NHL for ESPN.com. Information from STATS LLC was used in this report.

This man is around the same age as my parents, who are probably going to retire from their jobs before he does from hockey.

    Wow 48 and still playing.

I have no complaints, as long as he enjoys it let him play as long as he wants, same with Farve. If they can still play at a high enough level let them.

Remember, folks...if you encounter a hungry Chelios on a dark night with no help, blunt force trauma to the head or severing the head are the only ways to stop him for good.

If he plays tonight, both the oldest (Chelli) and the youngest (Evander Kane) currently in the league will be on the ice tonight.

He's playing at at extremely high level down in Chicago (seen him play two times this year) so he's obviously doing something right.

I hope ATL makes the playoffs and upsets WASH with Chelli scoring the OT winner in game 7.

22 points in 46 games, +34. He should go home already. No skills left.

    When Chelios was born...
-There were just the original 6 teams in the NHL
-Grodie Howe, Bobby Hull (yes Bobby, Brett's dad) and Stan Mikita still led the NHL

    When Chelios was a rookie
-There were 4 divisions and 21 NHL teams
-Tom Barrasso won the Calder Trophy for Rookie of the Year
-Pete Peters won the Vezina trophy
-The 21 teams included the Winnipeg Jets, the Hartford Whalers, Quebec Nordiques and the Minnesota North Stars.

Seriously, it time to hang 'em up Chelios!

Wanna know what makes me sad? Mark Messier was set to break the all-time games played record but decided upon early retirement when the lockout hit in 2004. Mark Messier played for 25 years! And only retired because of the lockout! Who knows how long he would have played had it never happened. He might be retiring after THIS season!

I did not know that about Messier, wasn't he only 18 games short of breaking it also?
