Leafs' Gustavsson undergoes heart procedure

"TORONTO - Three days after Jonas Gustavsson had to be hospitalized after nearly passing out during a fitness test, the Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender underwent a relatively non-invasive procedure on his heart.

The 24-year-old, who missed training camp practice Tuesday, had what head coach Ron Wilson described as a "cardiac ablation." It involves inserting catheters through the groin and sending a wire up into the heart in order to destroy the tissue that disturbs heart rhythms.

Wilson said that Gustavsson is not expected to miss more than 48 hours, but would likely not play a game until the weekend."

...Wow. They're trying to be pretty casual about it. Doesn't mean it's not serious. Dark clouds on the horizon?

Yikes...I'm no doctor, but I would imagine that any heart procedure is pretty serious. It's pretty scary stuff when you think about what happened to Alexei Cherepanov. Hopefully he has a safe recovery.

If this procedure corrected the condition, then he got away with a reasonably minimally invasive procedure - relative to heart surgery.

Sometimes this works, and the issue does not reappear. It may only provide a short term solution, and additional procedure(s) may be necessary.

Teppo Numminen rings a bell for some reason.....

I'm not necessarily comparing it to Cherepanov's death, just saying how it's scary that he passed out in practice because of this condition. It's just scary.

The doping wasn't what made his heart condition.

The doping was a way to boost energy levels, he had a condition of his heart which should not have allowed him ever to play hockey again, but it was either overlooked or paid off somehow.

My mother had this procedure, and while it's not something life threatening, it should not be dismissed as nothing, either. It means he is having electrical misfires in his heart causing an erratic heart rate. This can be a dangerous condition if untreated, but the ablasion may completely fix the problem.

Nothing can be taken for granted with this, though, and often times a repeat procedure is required.

I think it was former Flyers and Islanders goalie Tommy Soderstrom who had to have this procedure done a few times. Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome, I believe....

As opposed to having to open up the chest cavity, it's non invasive. Through the groin, up an artery, and to the heart. Hell, I have my doctor do that to me just for shits and giggles...

the doping certainly was a cause inhis death. he had a condition, yes. but the condition, coupled with his doping, which he had been doing for a while, accelerated the process ten fold.
