The Carolina Hurricanes reportedly have signed goaltender Cam Ward to a new six-year, $37.8 million contract extension.

According to a report on TSN, the team will make it official at a news conference Wednesday. The team had planned for what it termed as a major announcement regarding a player.

Ward had his best NHL season in 2008-09, setting career bests with 39 wins, a 2.44 goals-against average, .916 save percentage and six shutouts. He followed that by backstopping the Hurricanes to the Eastern Conference Finals.

The 25th pick of the 2002 Entry Draft made his first NHL impact in the 2006 Stanley Cup Playoffs, when he replaced starter Martin Gerber and guided the Hurricanes to the Stanley Cup. He also won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.

Makes Miller seem like a steal

One time I was at a Sabres-Canes game and this one guy was trying to taunt Ward, but he couldn't figure out how to do it since both 'Cam' and 'Ward' are one syllable, so he just started chanting, "goal-ieeeee".

It's simple, Ward-O.

Well I guess he deserves to get paid since he had a great year last year, and isn't a terrible goalie by any means.

I'm sure hell have around the same stats as last year.

Oh man, yes.

I just made the observation to someone the other day that adding an "o" to the end of a word seems to automatically make it offensive. Sicko, weirdo, wacko...

It's actually quite the common chant for his name. Because people even call him Wardo down here, not in a bad way, but if he makes a great save or something they go like WARDO.

hes money in the playoffs. but really, outside this past year, hes been very pedestrian stats wise in the regular season. before last year, his save percentage, career, in the regular season was sub .900

This has been a topic of hot debate (is there any other kind) amongst my friends.

One time I was at a Sabres game and ward couldn't find the net. Then he ran into the boards and urinated himself. He sucks, I'd rather put Diet Pepsi Machine in net.

"Cam-Mee" could be a good cat call.

I don't think he had enough time to develop before being thrown into the ring, last year was a good year for him, and he should have stats like that again as he is older now, closer to Miller's age now then when they went on their run to the cup.

Ward. Huet's too sketchy, and almost washed-up.

I have Mason too, I was thinking of using him as my secondary goalie.

I wish I had the other Mason on my team.
