All goes back to him snubbing Obama. What a fucking dickhead move. If I won the Stanley Cup when W. was in office, I would have relished going there to get his congratulations, especially since I hated his governing so much.

Sounds very Hasek like. We'll see if he jumps ship to a team that will be a contender in a couple years

I especially love that GW was worse than Obama.

Confirmed that he is not playing next season. Could very well be his retirement since he'll be 39 and a UFA come next off-season.

How do you figure?
The reactions I've read from his teammates at the time and regarding this development don't indicate that has anything to do with it.
I haven't been paying too close attention, but is the organization looking to push him out?
I think he's just being kooky because he can...he's getting on, he's got a cup, he's gotten paid, he's doing what he wants because he can.

I'm with Ed here.

Has nothing to do with his White House choice. Has everything to do with him being a whack job, and not giving a shit.

Best part of this? His money sits on the Bruins cap unless they can move him. Glorious. Thanks Timmy.

It was reported that he moved his family to Colorado already.

That would be awesome, but are you sure about this? It seems to me that if Thomas refuses to play then he has reneged on the contract, and the Bruins should not be penalized for that.

100% sure. It's a 35+ contract, aka the Mogilny rule.

If a player signs a multi-year deal after they hit age 35, once they start the second season, their cap number becomes permanent. Doesn't matter if they retire, get buried in the AHL, go to the KHL, or whatever.

It's designed to prevent teams from front loading an older player to an absurdly long deal that they'd never finish just to reduce the cap impact.

The only way his $5M hit comes off the Bruins' books is if they trade him. Otherwise it stays. Obviously they don't actually pay him if he doesn't report, but the cap space is locked up.

Thank you. I didn't know about that rule, but it certainly makes sense.

Organization had to make a statement that his views didn't reflect their views. It may have just been part of the overall picture, and not as vital as I mdae it there, but that definitely helped widen the rift between him and the team.

Thomas lost all my respect when he went all Howard Hughes/Tea Party. And I'm not talking about the band or building an all wooden plane.

I don't much care what his (or any player's) political views are. I'd like them to keep them out of their sports personas since sports is an escape for me, but even if they do I don't care.
