That leaves them with essentially only 3 legit NHL d-men: Timonen, Lilja, and Coburn.
The Sabres are absolutely loaded on defense. I think this most recent injury to an already weak and depleted Philly d-corps could set up an opportunity for us to work a trade with Holmgren. I could get down with Leopold and Sekera being sent over for Briere...
That way our top 3 centers would be Briere, Ennis and Hodgson. Solid. I'll always be ready to welcome Danny back with open arms.
Our defense would also still be solid even with the departure of Leopold and Sekera. We`d have Myers-Ehrhoff, Regehr-Weber, Sulzer-McNabb...with Brennan and Pardy waiting in the wings.

They still have Grossmann who is easily a top four d-man, so they aren't in horrible shape yet unless Timonen and Lilja start to slow way down from age. I doubt Regier wants to bring back old and divisive memories like Briere anyway. Buffalo needs a defensive shutdown type center, preferably and probably necessarily a bigger and tougher player than Briere, not to mention cheaper.

There isn't a Philly forward that Buffalo needs that Holmgren would agree to trade, and being semi-rivals I doubt they even call each other unless it's something like Pardy for a draft pick.

Lilja and Timonen are both in their late 30s, so they'll def. begin to slow down. Philly needs more NHL ready defensemen, and we have a surplus. Can't say I agree with the idea of Philly and Buffalo never being able to complete a trade because of a minor rivalry. They're not even in our division.
I don't think Briere would be adverse to returning to Buffalo now that the Golisano era is over.
All in all, I doubt it will happen...but I'd love it if it did!

Yeah I didn't mention the custody agreement they have. I think the kids are in New Jersey, and that's probably going to keep Briere in Philly.
