Mea Culpa. I have made nasty comments about Fehr and the players union. This months Sports Illustrated has an article which claims that the union would come down from a 57% share of income to 50% over the next few years, and it would be tied to league growth. No details were given but the news is encouraging. The owners want the players share at 47%, but I bet they settle at 50%.

Um, that was an early NHLPA offer that the league said wasn't even close to acceptable.

As hockey season is starting all over the world I get more and more upset about both parties. Overall I still dislike the league/owners more since they offered the contracts and they decided to create the "non-profit" franchises.

I think it is a strategic lockout by the league. Losing a few months of a season costs less money than less profit for 6 years.

I really feel bad for the employees of the clubs who depend on a season in order to have a (full time) job. It's gotta be tough to loose your job or get less hours/week just because the millionares can't find a common ground.

So is it set in stone and irreversible that a lockout will happen? Like, even if they reach a deal games won't be played for a certain period of time, if not a whole season?

I don't know I believe theyare still pretty far apart. I doubt a deal gets done any time soon. I believe there will be no season this year.

The lockout has already happened.

If they reach a deal, they'll work on a schedule then.

I know the lockout already happened, but if they reach a deal will they be able to start in October? Or will they need to wait?

Well, the teams will have a training camps once a deal is made. I'd say it will take at least 2 weeks to start the season, more likely 3 or 4.

They need camp at least.

They just need to reach a deal.

This lockout is such a fucking joke, I'm still in disbelief that it's really happening. So pathetic, I almost wish I didn't even like hockey because the fans are apparently really unimportant to the NHL. After all the money we invest in this league and this is what we get? Fuck them.

the meeting didnt even mention financial. it was about player safety issues. both sides agreed on them. a small piece of the puzzle is solved. but not much.

the only real sport where lockouts dont happen is college football. lockouts are a reality in professional sports.

So if you had to put a percentage on it, how likely do you feel it is that there will be no NHL this season?

I'm at about 95% myself.

I have offered the Sabres Junckie's good offices for mediation duty but no takers. Can not understand why reasonable people can't get together to solve this. In 20 years the NHL has lost almost 1700 regular season games. You don't need to be a forensic accountant to figure a lot of people have lost a lot of money.
