What if he doesn't report? I thought he was taking a sabbatical from hockey. Will they be over the cap floor if he refuses to play?

yes. this is purely a cap move. isles have to be over the cap. thomas still counts against the cap. isles gave up a second rounder for him. woof.

Why not just sign Dipietro to an extension? Isn't that how they always spend their money?

So if I understand this properly:
1) this sucks because that puts $5M back into Boston's salary cap.
2) the only reason this was allowed to happen was the complete incompetence of the Isles management.
3) why in the hell did the Isles send a 2nd rounder? They were doing Boston a favor just by taking Thomas off of their cap.

This smells like yet another boneheaded move by the Isles. Either that or they have been talking to Thomas and Thomas has agreed to play. Or both!

Yes they will be. His cap counts regardless since the contract was signed after he turned 35.

Keep in mind it's a 2nd rounder in either 2014 or 2015. So that second rounder may be a late pick if the Isles keep improving.

I saw this comment from the TSN article, which if true explains that the Isles won't actually have to give up the pick...

The pick is conditional on him reporting this year. He likely won't report to Long Island so Boston won't get anything but cap space for the move. The Islanders just get an extra $5 million they don't have to spend to get to the cap floor.

Yea it is conditional, so that's probably what it means.

I think he was told by the B`s to take the year off. I think the isles tell him he needs to put on his big boy pants and play goal because lol@isles.

He wouldn't have the defense in front of him on the Island like he did in Boston. Or the size intimidation, or the offensive skill throughout the lineup.

We won't ever see Thomas play another NHL game again is my bet. Anyone want to go 6 pack of beer on that?

My brother in Edmonton said he's heard the Isles and Oil may be close on a deal. DD isn't cutting it between the pipes from what he's seen and the Oilers may be in the hunt to upgrade in the case since Nikki isn't close to returning.

Maybe a move there? Who do the Oil send back in return to help the Isles with the cap floor issue?

Obvious choices would be Hemsky or Horcoff.

Dubnyk is 5-3-3 with a .928 sv percentage.

He's doing fine to me.

His game against Columbus yesterday was phenomenal. Oilers were outshot 40-14, and he saved 39 of them. Completely stoned Cam Atkinson on a one-timer.
