It seems that NHL coaches are on their way out when they start calling out their players. I knew Lindy was gone when he uncharacteristically badmouthed Roy. The same with Torts when he called one of his players 'terrible' and had negative comments about others. This stuff should be aired privately with the players involved. This public negative stuff sticks with the player no matter how well they play in the future. Usually they want out after a public rebuke. Things are bad with the Rangers when King Lundquist says he will consult with his agent about his future. I never heard Babcock speak ill of any of his players. He speaks in generalities--"we didn't play well in game 1 and 5; they got on top of us a lot; our goalie kept us in it; they are a good team, etc. etc." The same with most other coaches.

Personally, players should sack the hell up. We all know Derek Roy deserved it, and now he's a 3rd liner on Vancouver. Unless it isn't warranted, players should just accept that their coach thinks they should do better. Richards had one point in ten games, while getting benched for two games (I think?) and getting reduced ice time, he still blew ass before that.

But players not flying out of town as soon as the coach talks bad about them on the microphone probably won't happen. So yeah, it's a good idea for coaches to shush up.

I agree they may deserve it, but it ruins the team chemistry. Other players may wonder if they are next. The coach needs the teams trust and he should have their back.

It’s not rocket surgery.
If you’re a coach and you’ve got a player underachieving, of course you address it. But you do it in person, in private, NOT TO THE PRESS!
