Good for Pommers. Hope he wins one in Minnesota one day.

Edit: It's 5 years; 28 million. $5.6M AAV.

That's a pretty fair price for Pommers. Good for him.

Minnesota is a great place to play hockey (I guess). Good for him. Maybe he'll play with Vanek again soon, I'm sure Vanek would be stoked to play in Minnesota again.

Reading comments on other sites it sounds like Wild fans are already 100% convinced they're getting Vanek in free agency.

I'm skeptical.

I think it's possible. Heatly is a UFA after this season freeing up 7mill in cap space. They might try to get Vanek instead. I think if the Wild are a contender at the deadline, they might try to get Vanek as a rental for the playoffs and sign him afterwards.

Although Vanek would love to play in Minnesota, I'm sure he'll play where he'll get the most money and a realistic chance for the cup.

Well I'm not saying it's not a possibility, but Vanek is going to get paid when he goes UFA...these wild fans are saying things like he'd take a "hometown" discount to come there.

That's a bunch of crap IMO

That's IF we don't resign him/trade him to another team other than the wild...

Yes, that's bullshit. He might take a little discount for a contender instead of being on a crap team, but that's it.

Well, if we trade him he is still a UFA in the summer unless he signs with that team. Resigning with the Sabres is the most unlikely scenario to me at this point.

Vanek played at UMinn, works out there, has a house there, etc. I would imagine he'd love to play for the Wild. I hope it works out this way, providing we get something for him.

Yeah if we trade him, we better get something. But what does Minnesota have to offer? They'd give us prospects/picks, obviously, maybe Grandlund? Sort of like Pommers' return?

We should trade him wherever we get the best return, whether that's Minn or not. Then, if he and Minn come to an agreement when he's a FA, that's between them.

I'd rather us sign him. Unless we get a can't miss prospect for him. Any first round pick for him is gonna be a low pick.

Here's my guess what's gonna happen: Vanek want's to become a UFA and won't sign anything before the summer, therefor the Sabres are trading a rental player for the playoffs and will get a low first and second.

That's it? The Sabres got a 1st and two high-end prospects for Pominville. They'll get a bit more for Vanek at the deadline, even if he's a UFA.

Thing with Pominville was, he had an extra year on his contract, Vanek is not. That unfortunately hurts the return on Vanek.

Marian Hossa was acquired by the Pittsburgh Penguins at the trade deadline on February 26, 2008, along with Pascal Dupuis, in exchange for Colby Armstrong, Erik Christensen, prospect Angelo Esposito, and the Penguins' first-round pick in 2008 (Daultan Leveille). He was in a contract year.

Paul Gaustad went for a 1ST ROUND PICK in his contract year.

Being in a contract year doesn't hurt his trade deadline value whatsoever.
