NEW YORK -- Rangers enforcer Derek Boogaard suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative brain ailment related to Alzheimer's disease that is caused by repeated blows to the head, the New York Times reported.

The 28-year-old Boogaard, who died in May of an accidental overdose of alcohol and the painkiller oxycodone, was found to have had CTE -- which can be diagnosed only after the death of the patient, according to the third story of an extensive three-part series on Boogaard posted on the newspaper's website Monday night.

Boogaard's family donated his brain to the Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy at Boston University's School of Medicine.

Dr. Ann McKee, the director of the centre's brain bank, saw signature brown spots near the outer surface of Boogaard's brain, which are revealing signs of CTE.

Such damage in someone as young as Boogaard was surprising. Symptoms of the condition include memory loss, impulsiveness, mood swings and addiction.

Had Boogaard lived, his condition likely would have worsened into middle-age dementia.

"To see this amount? That's a 'wow' moment," McKee said of the damage to Boogaard's brain tissue. "This is all going bad."

The disease was more advanced in Boogaard than it was in famed enforcer Bob Probert, who died of heart failure in 2010 at 45. He played 16 seasons in the NHL and often struggled with alcohol and drug addiction.

Reggie Fleming, who was 73, and 59-year-old Rick Martin, were other hockey players who were found to have CTE.

Boogaard played parts of five seasons with the Minnesota Wild before signing with the Rangers as a free agent in the summer of 2010.

In 277 career NHL games, the six-foot-eight, 257-pound Saskatoon native recorded three goals, 13 assists and 589 penalty minutes.

SO sad.

makes me wonder if his drug problem, and death, could be attributed to this, atleast to some degree. also, with this coming out, the league really has to take some more measures to protect their enforcers, i'd think.

I've been saying this for at least a few years now. It's time to ban fighting in juniors, then maybe work on the NHL. I love to watch a fight, but not at this cost. You wouldn't have an enforcer spot on every team if there were no fighting in juniors.

The other thing I'd like to stress is that RICK MARTIN HAD CTE. That's why he just up and died at 59 to everyone's surprise. I tried to post that in one of these threads over the summer, but I think it was mostly (or totally) ignored. Does that hit close enough to home for you all? You want more of your heroes dying young? Hockey needs to find a better balance between machismo and safety.

You were the one who said fighting didn't lead to suicide in talking about Boogaard this summer. Any change of heart?

I thought he died of a heart attack?

He did. But I can't help thinking it's not entirely unrelated.

ok. so no one gets hurt, i propose the following rules.

no fighting
no hitting
no bumping
no ice and skates. play in shoes on concrete.
no slap shots where your stick is raised past your waist
no follow through where your stick is raised past your waist
no puck. use a tennis ball
no curve on stick. no raising the ball.
orange slice breaks every 10 minutes of play

leave the game alone. those who play, know they do so at risk.

^^This. They sign up knowing full well what could happen by playing the game. No one is forcing them to play. There are plenty of people who do a lot worse for a lot less. I will use members of the military as my example and leave it at that. Price to pay if you want to make bank.

BS. You think Boogaard, Probert, Belak, and Rippen knew the true risks of being an enforcer? I sure don't.

BS. Same business as boxing. You are telling me that they had never considered they would fall to a similar demise? That is bullshit.

my grandma committed suicide. she wasnt a hockey player with a history of head trauma. former NHL players went years without offing themselves at an alarming rate. one bad summer doesnt mean the NHL world should be flipped upside down.

Maybe there should be stricter penalties for fighting.

Maybe they should offer classes explaining what could happen if they continue with this type of lifestyle. Show them pictures and videos of head trauma victims several years down the road. Offer psychological evaluations every month, mandatory. Don't change the game just educate the players. I think a lot of players would stop with dirty hits and fighting if they were better educated on the matter. Those that continue do so for their teams and for our entertainment.

People get lung cancer without ever smoking too. Does that mean there's no connection?

I think fighting is an important part of hockey.
I don't think the role of enforcer is however...this is why you can find Andrew Peters on a golf course.

The trend has been teams relying less and less on strict enforcers (eating up a roster spot) so I see no reason why the situation would need to be addressed in an official manner.
