If you weren't aware, NASA and JPL are in the exciting phase of what's been called the mission of the decade.

The Curiosity rover is the size of an SUV...much larger and much more capable than anything we've ever sent to Mars before.
It's set to land on Sunday night.

Yeah, I really hope everyone checks out how insanely difficult and well engineered this feat actually is. Check out this video to realize how dumb the rest of us are:

I used to work with a developer who spent time at JPL writing code for various spacecraft...he used to have to dumb things down for people while explaining things so I often overheard "see things in space move very, very fast..."

My curiosity is piqued.

I am curious as to how it will turn out.

That is all for my pre-coffee curiosity.

Hell yes. Not looking forward to work tomorrow though, as I'm bound not to sleep tonight.

So um yeah...we landed a 1 ton vehicle on Mars and it immediately started sending us pictures.

Since curiosity isn't beholden to solar panels, it will be able to observe the Martian landscape and atmosphere at night and during the winter which has never been possible before.

I've been pretty busy, but I had the chance this morning to hear on NPR the step by step process for landing that thing. Pretty freaking cool, especially the last bit about the rockets disengaging from the capsule and actually lowering it to the surface with wires? WTF? That is pretty f-ing cool. It was great hearing the cheers in the control room as they actually touched down, it was like 20 super bowl celebrations rolled up into one. Good stuff.

Sad I couldn't stay up to watch it, fell asleep with NASA TV on my iPad.

Frigging awesome that they landed it.

they did it just to celebrate my birthday. Thanks NASA for your thoughtfulness (better than the OTHER thing that happened 67 years ago on my birthday)
