So, what is your plan from here on out? Are you just...completely and totally never going to drink again? Or are you going to seek some sort of safe 'middle ground', even though you've not had success with that before?

I ponder setting rules for myself like, I can drink on weekends, not weekdays. Or....not until 9 or 10pm, stuff like that. I seriously do not want to decend into total drunkenness, but dont really want to give up my delicious IPAs either.

There's no middle ground with alcoholism. There's also no cure. It's no drinking. At all. Ever.

With all due respect to your situation growing up, (and that must have been tough), does this definitely apply to everyone, across the board? I mean, it's basically saying that human will is never going to be strong enough to moderate something that you know is a danger to you if used in excess.

Although, I suppose if you have enough will power you dont even GET to the point where you're an 'addict', as in, you see the warning signs and do something about it.

Interesting topic here, thanks for bringing it up and sharing DP.

Yes. Alcoholism is a disease. It is an addiction to alcohol. It's not an 'addiction' to use your quotes. It's a physical and mental dependence on alcohol ingestion, which renders responsible recreational use impossible.

Saying an alcoholic should drink less is like saying a heroin addict should just shoot up less frequently, or a cocaine addict should do less blow. The definition of the illness includes the fact that one cannot control consumption.

I also don't mean to imply that DF has been diagnosed as an alcoholic; that's his personal thing, and his choice to reveal that or not.

Yup, no drinking from here on out. I'm a full fledged alcoholic, not doubts about that. The difference between moderate drinkers, problem drinkers, heavy drinkers and the alcoholic is the physical brain changes hat have happened. The brain has been rewired to actually reward itself chemically (dopamine, saretonin etc) at higher levels for taking a drink than say getting a hug from your daughter or whatever else you would normally get happy about. With that screwed up reward center at the high brain level you have zero control over how much you drink. Drinking becomes confused with survival at a mid-brain level and that root is what eventually hijacks your chemical system, completely fucking up any attempt to moderate or be normal. The shitty thing is that the disease never gets better. Your cravings and obsessions about drinking get better but if you take even one drink that compulsion to drink more and more is still there, and sometimes it gets stronger the longer you are dry.

The second you posted your counted days, I pretty much knew that's what your diagnosis was.

You're not alone man, and although you're right that the want never goes away, it does get better. Admitting that you had a problem and seeking help was by far the hardest thing you'll ever have to do. You'll beat it. Every day. One day at a time. You know what resources you have available to you, use them. As much as you need to.

You'll get through it.

I'll say this DF, looks like you're not the only alcoholic around these parts (I'm looking at myself here too). But you are the only one doing something about it. I hope that makes you feel better when you read all these posts about alcohol. Keep up the good work.

Nah I didn't drink every day, probably 3-4 weekends a month.

I think he might have been talking about me.

im talking about whoever wants to respond.

my days of getting drunk 7 days a week are over. my body cant handle it anymore, and its not cute to drink like a college kid like that at my age. but when i am with my old college buddies, we still put out.

i dont think im an alcoholic. but i will say this. when i find myself depressed, i hit the bottle. and hard.

Besides my fraternity, that's what got me going too....my Mom died, my Grandma died and I lost my job all in 1 month. I drank for about 6 months solid after that.

Figured I'd pop in and let you all know I'm still sober. Passed 100 days this passed Tuesday. Now if hockey could just fucking get sorted I'd be great.

Thanks guys. The funny thing is that all the times before when I tried to quit all I did was think about drinking from the time I "quit" until the time I eventually drank again. This time I haven't even thought about taking one. I have had some crazy blood sugar shit happening that isn't much fun but all in all I'm doing pretty well. Right now though I am getting ready for a fucking hurricane to hit land and I ran out of cigarettes. This blows.
