Now that I got some sleep....
WVA / Morgan State : About what I expected. Morgan State was game, and held the lead for a good chunk of the first half, but Huggie reminded the boys that the ball has to go IN the basket, and that turned things around. WVA couldn't buy a bucket early, but straightened themselves out towards halftime
Clemson / Mizzou : What. A . Game. Fast pace, both teams up and down the floor, great hustle all over the place. I knew Mizzou lead the nation in turnovers, but DAMN, now I see why. Was a tight game going into and coming out of the half, each possession changing the lead. Phenomenal basketball the entire game from both teams.
Gonzaga / FSU : Typical Gonzaga game. They come out to a good lead, and then putz around and allow their opponent to creep back in. FSU picked up some crowd support late as they clawed back, but they couldn't overcome that early hole. FSU cheerleaders were their usual eye candy. All dance team, no gymnastics, no dudes. Came out wearing spandex hot pants and sports bras early, then someone complained and made them put their warmup jackets back on before the half, drawing a rousing chorus of boos from our end of the arena. So, they came back out with slightly less slutty outfits in the 2nd, and getting a good cheer for it. Honestly, the cheerleader drama was more interesting than most of this game.
Syracuse / Vermont : The place was the Carrier Dome West. Aside from one student section for Vermont, it was a massive sea of partisan orange. No cardboard cutouts of Boehiem's head, although there was one of Otto. The 'Cuse blitzkrieged them early, but got sloppy and let Vermont close out the half on a good run. This is good, as it gives Jim something to be mad about.
Vermont didn't help themselves by trying to dribble through the zone, but they did cash 3 awesome alley-oop dunks on NICE backdoor cuts right in front of us. Cuse didn't look bad without Arinze, although you gave to remember that this is Vermont we're talking about.
Looking forward to Sunday. Both games should be great. WVA/Mizzou should be a barn burner. If WVA can't handl Mizzou's press, they could be in for a long day. Syracuse matches up well against Gonzaga I think, but it won't be a walk in the park. The Zags will make them work inside much more than Vermont did.
