I see both sides of the argument.

The team feels that Jeter is on the decline, and they don't think he's worth as much to them.

Jeter feels that last year was an aberration, and he's not as far gone as they think he is.

They've played hardball with players in their late 30s for years. This really isn't turning out any differently.

yeah, and thats the yankees for you. but i mean, you could see jeter in decline right before your eyes. the batspeed that made his inside-out swing so lethal is diminished. but hes still capable of playing decent baseball.

some more stats.

last year, jeter was a 16% line drive hitter, where as in the past, he was always in the 20-24% range. that -4-8% is a MASSIVE drop, which means hes struggling to centre the ball.

hal steinbrenner said the yankees dont owe him anything, that the yankees have made players richer then some of their bosses.

im consumed with this topic. its such a rarity.

im talking to myself in this thread! haha

jeter asking for 6 year, 150 dollar contract: 25 million a year.http://www.tsn.ca/mlb/story/?id=342923
the yankees offered a 3 year, 45 million dollar contract, and thats as high as they will go.

honestly, its looking more and more likely jeter is not a yankee next year.

If Jeter does walk, who do you see the Yankees going after to replace him?

excellent question. i wonder if they would sign beltre to play third, and put a-rod back at short. can a-rod still play short? thats whats making this so confusing!

maybe jj hardy?

This story is so fucking awesome. My favorite part is the yankees telling jeter and his agent to drink a reality potion.

yankees upping the offer to jeter. i assume hell sign it.

however, i heard he is rather upset the guy playing third makes more then him. note to jeter: alex rodriguez, douchebag supreme, yes, is light years better then you.

I was hoping they'd send him packing haha. Anything to see Yankee fans whine and expose the yankees as classless.

Are the Yankees classless if their SS doesn't accept a deal worth almost twice his market value?

not in this case, but the yankees are a classless club in some ways. always have been, always will be. they are CUT THROAT.

whats silly is "mr. yankee" and the man who bleeds pinstripes, was offered a deal in which he was offered TWICE his market value. a number no other team would touch. and he wants A-ROD MONEY! and hes bitter over a-rod making more then him. jeter is nowhere near the player a-rod is. name recognition only gets you so far.

i dont care if hes from kalamazoo, fuck jeter.

Regardless of what happened, if Jeter were to walk, I think that overall baseball fans would blame the yankees, whether it was actually their fault or not. That's what I meant. They could offer him a perfectly reasonable contract that is too low for his deluded claims and he could reject it, but the fan perception would still probably be "those asshole yankees."

Which is hilarious.
