Babe Ruth is still overrated. Most fans treat him as unquestionably the greatest baseball player ever, which is flat out not true.

If somebody came along these days and hit around 200+ HRs for over a decade would they be overrated? Could that player possibly be overrated?? It wouldn't matter what else they could or couldn't do on the field (even though Ruth was one of the best pitchers of his day before only playing RF).

Because he isn't unquestionably the greatest player of all time.

In fact, he isn't even the greatest player of all time, period.

So what? In his day he did at the plate what entire teams could not match. We're talking about records that are unbreakable, not about the best player in any given sport. In his day he was one of the best (maybe the best) ball player overall, but what he did at the plate (in one particular aspect of the game) was and will always be unmatched.

That's fine, just offering commentary on Ruth. Threads twist and turn like that.

Ok, you started the thread but somebody mentioned something about a player you don't like that played for a team that you hate...so twist the thread. Gotcha.

I think that Ruth's duality will never be challenged either, being a great hitter and pitcher. That's one area where I think he rises above anyone else.

I have no problem with Griffey being up there. I think Cobb is a cut above everyone else.

That Cobb, who was hated for being an asshole, was voted first into the hall of fame over the likable Ruth is very telling.

i find it great that after cobb passed, they found hundreds of letters written to the HOF to get sam crawford in, who cobb didnt get along with.

He was the all time leader in number of triples if he still isn't today.

Yeah, he's first with 309, and Cobb is second with 295.
