He said THEN clearing cap room. And it was just a passing comment in an AIM conversation with him.

Also, Marleau is going to make 7M, but that's just my own personal hunch.

I wouldn't touch Marleau. He's a better winger than a center and I don't see him being that clutch centerpiece guy the Sabres need.

Brad Richards, Evgeni Malkin, and Joe Thornton are the dream #1 centers that I think would be fits for what the Sabres need right now.

But, the Sabres won't go out and get those types of players.

Oh, trust me, I've had Brad Richards on the brain since the Sabres got eliminated. But his contract will definitely be a deterrent, and he's not the kind of guy the Sabres will trade for.

I liked Phils Idea of sending Butler, Stafford, Roy, and Gerbe to Clags for Iginla and Glencross then freeing some cap room to add marleau.

That deal doesn't clear cap space.

Outgoing:
Butler - 850k
Stafford - 1.9M
Roy - 4M
Gerbe - 850k

Total Outgoing - $7.6M

Incoming:
Iginla - 7M
Glencross - 1.2M

Total Incoming - $8.2M [plus you have two roster spots to fill.....]

I can't see how you could realistically clear other space as it's unlikely the Sabres could purely dump contracts like say Pominville to make room for the insane deal that Marleau is likely to get on the open market.

That's too big a trade for Mr Conservative! It will never happen.

I would love to see Cullen here as well, but if he's going to come in to help with center depth, there's some tinkering to be done. I mean, a trade for Malkin or signing Marleau is going to require one of Roy or Connolly shipped out and the other relegated to the second line. Cullen would be slotted in as a third line center...would Cullen signing here signal the end of the Goose, or would the Sabres have the most expensive fourth line center in the league?

I'd see it stacking up as such: Malkin/Marleau (1st), Roy/Connolly (2nd), Cullen (3rd), Goose (4th). Shitdamn, that's an expensive center line-up.

But if you look at the Pens, they are stacked up the middle... from Sid... Melkin... Stahl.... Talbot? and Flurey... it seems to be a great way to build a team... and one area we are a bit weak/small at... are Timmy or Roy really first line C? or are they both really 2nd line C? Heck you could argue the Melkin and Sid are really first line C and Stahl is really a 2nd line C... talent wise...

The Hawks need to cut payroll and that deal would add $$$ to Chicago's cap.

I would expect Chicago to want something like Ennis & Butler for Bolland & Sharp.

Chicago sheds a lot of payroll in that deal.

LOL we can't afford it. How about Sharp for Stafford, Butler, and a 5th round pick.

If they can put Sharp at center then yes.

The Sabres could afford it if they were to then make other moves like dealing Pominville, Connolly, or Roy in deals that shed payroll.

I think after watching this year's post season, the answer is simple. Shed Connolly for a 2nd, and sign Marleau. When Big Pavelski finally ended, Marleau was once again left the only Shark standing. I can't imagine he feels he owes San Jose anything, in fact he may like telling them to fuck off. If we can't convince him to come here, then I hope Anaheim lures him in. I'd hope he'd rather make a TEAM deadly(and win a cup) than worrying about getting 1st line minutes. Imagine starting the season:

Perry-Getzlaf-Ryan
Marleau-Koivu(unsigned, but probable)-Lupul(if he returns healthy and strong)
I know there's a lot of "ifs" there, but I'd be trembling if I was Big Joe next year. Imagine adding Teemu into that equation. He can still play at a very high level, too. Yet to be seen if he still has another great playoffs in him though.

OK, so we shed Connolly for a 2nd round pick and sign Marleau to play wing? I say wing because he is MUCH more effective on the wing than he is at his old position, center. Now we're left with a gap at center.
