Ottawa is rebuilding. That's no secret. The Sabres on the other hand are thinking playoffs, and Regier has been given the green light to spend. I read about Brad Richards and Paul Stasny in other threads, but to be honest, there are very few centers (maybe only 3 or 4) in the league I'd rather have on my team than Jason Spezza. Buffalo lacks offense and he supplies that in spades.

Now he is signed long term and he may be at the center of Ottawa's rebuilding plans. But maybe they really want a clean slate. He's their most expensive player at $7mil cap hit, and that's a lot, but it still comes cheaper than Richards cap hit of $7.8mil, and IMO he's WAY better at this point in his career. Why not make a play? Offer up Roy, a defenseman, and picks. Ottawa gets a hometown boy in Roy that can serve as center #1 or #2, and costs them $3mil per year less that they can use to go out and build a new team. Everyone wins.

Make me proud Darcy.

Spezza is a flaming douchebag. No thanks.

I would love to have Spezza on our team, I've been saying we should trade for him.

I think I even said it in the GDT where we played Ottawa, and said we should trade for him so he can't kill us anymore.

It is impossible to trade an injured Roy unless you wait until the postseason. Also, I think we can resolve our center needs before tomorrow's deadline.

The Senators will look to keep a veteran or two around as they rebuild. Alfredsson is going nowhere. Spezza may prefer to stay as well unless the Senators want to get younger without him.

To me it's not a question of whether the Sabres would want him, that's a no-brainer. He's a gifted player and he'd be great on any team in need of a top center. It's more about would Ottawa be willing to part with him and what would it take.

If Ottawa has already given up on the season, then why not sell them on Roy for the future?

I would give away Gerbe and Mancari, a defenseman in Butler or Sekera, and a first round pick.

Why would Ottawa make that trade? No, I think Roy is a key here, because he's maybe the only Sabre that's a "good buy" at a $4mil cap hit for the next two years.

I'm not opposed to Spezza, despite his attitude, but trading a pt/gm center like Roy at only 4 mil for a pt/gm center like Spezza for 7 mil does not make sense. We need to add a center, not replace one with another, unless it's Connolly because he's as good as gone anyway. Roy is by far our best pts per dollar value. He should be untouchable.

Spezza is still a better player. His career PPG is higher than Roy.

Some anti-Sabres hockey columnists have us as keeping Connolly. (Right...wrong!)

We want to keep Roy, not get rid of him. Until Ennis is good enough for top line duty, which I hope soon, we need to fille one top center position, not both.

Not sure I agree there. Roy has 383 pts in 469 games, Spezza has 507 pts in 506 games. That's .82 pt/game for Roy, 1 pt/game for Spezza. Plus, Roy is on the shelf for the rest of this season. I'd tkae that extra .2/pts a game + availability and a longer contract for the extra $3 mil.

Spezza might be a better player, but just slightly. He had bloated pt totals, earned non-the-less, but playing with Heatley and Alfredsson is far and away better than playing with Vanek and a no-show on RW like Roy has.

Since Heatley left, Spezza's pts have dropped, but Roy's have stayed steady or improved until he got hurt. Regardless of career totals, both players are now producing the same, but Spezza costs a top two winger/top two d-man more than Roy.

Roy has much better numbers in the last few seasons. Trading Roy away to get Spezza makes no sense. Unless we can find a way to pry Spezza out of Ottawa without giving up a center and mortgaging our future, I don't want him. Seeing as the Sens will want our future, I'm not even considering Spezza an option.

The only thing Buffalo I can see trading away prospect wise is some of their Defensive prospects and possibly a couple of picks and maybe Gerbe. I would also like to add that maybe Spezza will be alot better player away from Ottawa. He's been under a microscope for years over there.

I would give anyone from our future up except Kassian, Ennis, or Myers. Other than that go ahead I want Spezza.

But Roy for Spezza defeats the purpose. Sure, Spezza is a bit better than Roy, but who the fuck cares. It's still not helping our center problem.

I would throw Foligno in your untouchable group and I say that because with Boston having Lucic, Chara and Horton we need more than just one big guy in Kassian to battle these guys.

If we want a fighter, let us get someone like Matt Cooke. That KOs the competition.
