Everyone was a rookie at some point and i would assume that in the guys past work (school or professional) they saw something they liked. The fact that he was a rookie probably did help on the cost.
The way these things work is the designer will do a bunch of rough designs and take them to the team. team picks the ones they like and the guy starts refining the ideas and submits them again. this process will keep going until they the team give the go ahead of the final design. so while the guy being a rookie looks kind of bad, its still tommy and larry that gave the approvals
