Sabres now have

2 first rounders in 2013
2 second rounders in 2013

1 first rounder in 2014
3 second rounders in 2014

1 first rounder in 2015
2 second rounders in 2015

What do you think is gonna happen with these picks?

Would you trade any or would you just focus on drafting at this point?

As we saw last year, Darcy can make Calgary do anything he wants them to.

They have to trade some. They are drop vets like its the end of the world. After next season we will lose Miller and Vanek. There NO WAY to build a really cup contender on strickly picks...NO WAY! There is no great UFA's that would go near this team right now. If there is, the Sabres would have to pay them astronomical amounts of money to sign long term. Realize this will not be a 2 or 3 year project....I'm personally thinking 5 years. They need to find a hell of a goalie or be lucky to find a diamond in the rough (like Miller). Don't know if that lightning will strike twice....

Lightning seems to do that a lot for the Sabres. Don't forget Hasek. Could also be Leggio.

We need to get an impact player out of the draft, then go to free agency and patch the holes we have.

I think we could keep Miller and Vanek around... At least one of the two.

Then trade some of our picks, like a few of our thousands of seconds, to get another player on the roster.

IDK lol.

I think we all might as well accept the fact that there is about a 0% chance that we can move Vanek. Next year the salary cap comes down $6 million per team. Vanek's cap hit is over $7 million. I'm more optimistic about trading Miller, preferably over the summer, but that could be tricky, too.

I agree with Sabresindc. It's gonna take a long time to get where we want to be. At least Darcy appears to have accepted that we weren't going anywhere with this team, and a complete rebuild is in order.

With only one year left on his contract, even at a $7.2M, Vanek's contract is very moveable, even with the salary cap drop. Teams like the Islanders, Avalanche, Panthers, etc., will still struggle to hit the floor.

Edit: Bottom 5 team cap payrolls for the 2013-14 season:

1) Winnipeg: $36,383,333
2) NYI: $35,691,833
3) St. Louis: $32,636,667
4) NJD: $32,087,500
5) PHX?: $30,550,000

So yeah. Vanek is plenty moveable with just one year left on his deal. Plus, his salary ($6.4M) is lower than his cap ($7.2M), so that will help some team out.

I hope you are right. I'm just concerned that teams won't want to make such a big investment for only one year, with no guarantee he stays afterwards. I think it's pretty clear that Vanek just wants to win, and probably won't stay with a bad team regardless of what they offer him.

Yeah, he's moveable.... Someone will find a way to pay him.

Anybody think Vanek will end up in Minnesota? Apparently he has a house there. He spent his college years there. The Wild are going in the right direction. And Pommers is there.

But Heatley is the weight around their neck – $7.5 M cap hit for next year. The Wild are probably considering buying out Heatley. Well, if the Sabres are truly in re-build mode – and you’re going to laugh – then maybe we trade Vanek for Heatley and picks/prospects. The Wild keep their salary cap intact, get rid of a guy who is useless to them, and get Vanek who likely finishes his career there. We might need Heatley’s salary to stay over the cap floor if Miller hits the road.

Remember: A team can request the Sabres pick up up to half of a player's salary in a trade, making Vanek even more moveable.
